Hello new followers (and old!). In case you were wondering, my latest book, Leif The Unlucky Viking, out from Walker Books, probably contains my bestest drawings ever and is probably the funniest too. (Well, I liked it.)

Dear Mr. Clegg

I have started a business, selling the contents of your house

I knew when I launched I did not have legal access your house

Without this access my company will not be profitable

Others have told me I have a flawed business model, but I disagree

Please advise how I should proceed

This was just posted by @tbretc.bsky.social on another platform. The Chicago Sun-Times obviously gets ChatGPT to write a ‘summer reads’ feature almost entirely made up of real authors but completely fake books. What are we coming to?

Already well thumbed, with thanks @wrdmag.bsky.social @walkerbooksuk.bsky.social. Julius Zebra's latest adventure, this time in Ancient China. An absurdly comic piece of fiction studded with fascinating historical facts. Gary Northfield @stupidmonster.bsky.social always has us howling.

Oh hey that’s my quote.
Incidentally I spent Saturday writing my speech for London Book Fair. I’m chuffed with how it turned out. It mostly covers how children’s comics were abandoned by publishers in the 90s/00s, and in doing so we lost a generation of readers.

Had a brilliant #worldbookday, fantastic, jolly upbeat teachers and kids, 110% effort in costumes all round too! Such a life-affirming day :) A visiting parent (who was also a teacher) asked me in reception if I was an author, because I looked like one! 🥸 I’ve no idea what that means!

The Government is siding with big tech over British creativity.

Today is the FINAL chance to respond to their consultation on AI and copyright.

Every major UK newspaper - left, right, broadsheet, tabloid - is running a front page campaign against copyright carveouts for AI training.

I can't remember the last time any political cause had such broad support, let alone one so anti-big tech and so economically consequential.

The ONE THING the UK punches above its weight at is the creative industries. Every move either party has made in the last 15 years has been to wreck them.

See also this @danfrancis02.bsky.social Hardworking artists and writers are having their IP stolen by the AI industry and the Labour Government is handing it them on a plate. There is an online consultation, but it is deliberate gobbledygook and impenetrable management speak.
Didn't have to read too much of the consultation to realise it is merely window dressing; a government wanting to be seen as doing the right thing while it has already decided to do the wrong thing.
The UK’s AI Opportunities Action Plan, published today, proposes legalising the mass theft of IP by AI companies. And the government has already accepted its recommendations, revealing the ongoing consultation on AI & copyright as a sham.
