It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

Lizza. Nuzzi.

What were the odds of two people with double-z’s in their last names finding each other?

And then the consonant-vowel-SS-vowel thing.

And their first names with a preponderance of vowels.

A weird kind of destiny.

I can think of 2 reasons for Dems to cave: 1-Johnson has to call reps back and seats Dem which opens opportunity to vote on Epstein files; 2-Let the Republicans fully own the bad outcomes from undercutting ACA.

Long Drive Hack: Listening to audiobooks of books that I hated to read (until I eventually loved it). The entire book is now a thing of joy. Huge improvement over my usual podcasts on whatever is wrong with the world today (too much).

Always worth reading the Gettysburg threads. Stay with it until the end.
At this time of day on July 2, I’m drawn to think of the several thousand US troops spread out in an ever thinning line along Culp’s Hill, on the US right. All afternoon, units have been pulled from this position to bolster the left flank - Little Round Top, the Wheatfield, and Cemetery Ridge

It’s a list of colleges tiny and immense, all as equals in this goal. Lovely.
To say it once more today: I think you'll be moved if you take 2 minutes to look through 269 institutions signed on here.

Yes, still a few notable absences. (Where is Stanford?) But such an array of *presence.* Big and small. Public and private. World famous and barely known. Check them out.
Now it's nearly 270 university presidents who have signed onto this "unprecedented government overreach" public letter. It was less than 180 this morning.

>>one young person told me: “I want people to know about what they did to Americorps. For many of us, this was our way to pay for college, to get away from home, to figure out what to do with our lives, it was a big step. And they just ripped it out from under us without even a 2-week’s notice.”<<
NEW: i spoke with several young AmeriCorps volunteers around the country who were abruptly pulled off projects building homes, readying forests for wildfire season, and working at food banks Tuesday afternoon. they are now on their way home thanks to DOGE cuts —
DOGE Cuts Pull AmeriCorps Volunteers Off of Disaster Relief Jobs
The youth volunteers who were working on projects ranging from rebuilding homes destroyed in storms to distributing supplies for hurricane recovery were suddenly pulled from service. Why? DOGE cuts.
