More Than 170 U.S. Citizens Have Been Held by Immigration Agents. They’ve Been Kicked, Dragged and Detained for Days.
The government does not track how often immigration agents grab citizens. So ProPublica did. Our tally — almost certainly incomplete — includes people who were held for days without a lawyer. And near...

I’ve been reluctant to recognize the fact that impeachment is not a realistic safeguard, but unfortunately I think JVL is right here.

"The evidence-based conclusion is that impeachment cannot work because of a design failure."

I never put much credence in the idea that the president has major, direct influence over the general economy. But this administration has shown that, given enough leeway and incompetence (or malice?), they absolutely can wreck it.
it really is astounding that a presidential administration crashed the growth trajectory of the wealthiest country on the planet in basically two months

Just a reminder how classic what we're seeing is:
1. redefine a group as a threat to civilization
2. reduce legal protections that they enjoy
3. abuse, threaten, harm, and/or relocate them
4. dismiss/ignore concerns about abuses and harms from the process
5. repeat steps 2-4, escalating each time
Confession that due process is or should be optional according to the vice president

One thing Trump's reelection has made exceedingly clear is the extent to which—beneath the veneer of seriousness and importance—humanity truly does persist in complete absurdity.

It's amazing we've managed to accomplish as much as we have.
lol this was quite the way for Trump to wrap up a "dinner remarks" speech that flirted with 2 hours in length

Justice Sotomayor, writing in today's deportation case. How many times must she write, "With fear for our democracy, I dissent," before Republicans get the point? Perhaps only when, as the poem goes, they come for them.

NC Court of Appeals gives over 60,000 challenged voters 15 days to prove eligibility
The majority wrote that, even though they have the authority to completely throw out the contested ballots, they decided to instead mandate a cure period for most of the challenged voters.

Feeling this more every week.

"The effects of all this are to make those who are not in lockstep with MAGA feel they are losing their grip on reality. What is happening is that our reality is being remade before us in the image of an irrational, chaotic, despotic, and unscientific worldview."

Up until last night Congress had been completely failing to rise up to this moment as the emergency that it is. Booker's act is primarily one of symbolism, but symbolism is essential for swaying the tides of public opinion.

Thank you, Senator.
I’ve taken the Senate floor and will speak for as long as I’m physically able to lift the voices of Americans who are being harmed and not being heard in this moment of crisis. Watch here:

I think the last six months have likewise finally and completely quashed any remaining faith I held that Americans were, on balance, virtuous.
The decisive test of our society in my lifetime was the 2024 election and our failure was spectacular and total. I will never again have any faith in the American electorate to do the obviously right thing.

Trump is building support for the idea that the "radical left" courts must be defied to save the country. So that once they do so, the right will have already been convinced he is doing a good thing.
Is this the same guy who tore into people for criticizing judges when he spoke at the Justice Dept *checks calendar* just last week?

People need to be crystal clear about something: The requirement that the government ANSWER to a court on the legal basis for detaining someone is literally the core liberty right (habeas corpus). If the government says they don’t have to do that bc “national security,” YOU can be disappeared.
