What Robert Redford contributed to American films via Sundance is genuinely immeasurable. He was also an extraordinarily talented director--Ordinary People and Quiz Show are two of the best American studio movies of their eras--and an actor who somehow wore his incredible charisma almost shyly. RIP.

Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips announces he has taken a buyout and the Trib is eliminating his post. Unless I am missing someone I believe this leaves the nation's third-largest city without a single full-time film writing gig.

that said, as someone who loves writing reviews & has written thousands & is proud of that & thinks reviews are important, seeing culture coverage, critics & reviews constantly take it on the chin for the past decade--esp last few years--has been really fucking hard.
