One thing the NYC mayoral race underscored for me is how easily the phrase "I don't feel safe" can be weaponized. It's an argument I would hesitate ever to use again, even for a good cause. I hope we can all agree that we have the right to BE safe. Maybe we should leave it at that.

Even those who love movies may feel that they can't always handle the emotions that a film heats up. They need to talk to friends, to read critics, in order to understand why they're reacting as they are, and whether it's an aberration or others feel the same way. (1976)

Though I've lived in NYC for 25+ years, I know very little about Staten Island (beyond the stuff everybody knows, like, that it's extremely conservative). Curious about this little fringe of blue on the voting map. What's -that- part of Staten Island like?

Haven't loved any film this year more than NOUVELLE VAGUE. It's both a shout of joy and a call to arms; great artistry is worth caring about, even if the big-time bean counters in our current culture treat it as throwaway. Linklater clearly poured his soul into this thing. time.com/7286313/nouv...

I know nothing should surprise me, but I'm stunned by this picture. If you own a designated historic property (not that I do), usually you can't even install a doorbell that isn't period-specific. Or at least you wouldn't. This makes me heartsick.
