I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

One by one, Europeans mentioned in the Epstein files who still hold political office are beginning to resign or are being forced out of office.

Meanwhile, ruled by an administration almost entirely made up of Epstein associates, the US carries on as if nothing really happened.

I feel like part of my shtick on BlueSky is to point out that yes, AI is real and it is especially important for critics to realize it is real, since we need more good criticism of AI, rather than dismissals that it is hype

Well: the impact of Claude Code/CLIs & successors is going to be very large

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

you know this guy is a FOR REAL photographer because he's telling the story of his brutal, unconditional arrest by federal goons and can't help but slip in a gear review
Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

I'm pro-union because I think workers should organize to balance the power that business owners have in various negotiations. It's true that unions have been weakened, but it's not because of multiculturalism. I would argue, it's because people seek to exploit divisions for their material interests.

But his assertion that diversity weakens unions ignores two things. First, labor unions have a long history of multiethnic coalitions. Second, it was the capitalists and political elites who tried to *exploit* ethnic divisions to maintain power. There is only one person here trying to stop unions:

AI would advance even if OpenAI disappeared. AI really actually does powerful things that will transform a lot of how we live and work even if AI did not advance further. The way to influence the future is not to pretend that AI is going to go away, but push for it to be used well & mitigate harms.

Every few months on BlueSky there is a hot story of how AI is going to go away soon: model collapse, walls to AI development, legal issues, now financial bubbles.

But even if there was a bubble that popped, AI would not go away: 10% of humans use it weekly, increasing use cases in companies, etc.

They convinced themselves of that because the only thing that affects people who are that materially comfortable is bad manners. It’s *their* defining problem, the only thing they are still terrified of: that someone will be sharply rude to them at the fancy dinner or in the private members’ club.
I will never understand how American elites managed to convince themselves that uncivil debate — not fascism, not impunity and not widespread indifference to facts — is the defining problem of our time.

I don't know anyone who uses LLMs a lot who is not occasionally weirded out by what they can do. If you are not, you should be. They are weird.

Wolfram had a rather startling (at least at the time) theory after using ChatGPT. Understanding whether he is right seems important.

It really takes a lot for me to say this, but the Graham tweet is genuinely a pretty offensive thing to say.
Despite seeing several people I totally trust say this was real I still felt I had to verify it with my own eyes. And having done so I still can't believe it's real.
