Meta will no longer accept political, election or issue ads in EU
Meta's decision comes ahead of regulation it says will cause "significant operational challenges and legal uncertainties."

What Abou-Chadi et al. show here is not just that conservative migration positions won't help social-democrats to attract voters, but also that left positions on retirement (that is allowing for early retirement) make social-democrats most attractive (and right positions make them less attracitve).

*Register data* results now published for whole Germany:

37% of women under 25 voted for die Linke in the German federal elections in 2025.

Also very striking to see that the AfD was the strongest party among *all age groups of men except those older than 60*.

Nice thread on the importance of migration for the (Swiss) watch industry.
Not true.

I see you're a luxury watch dealer. I'm also interested in watches. Let me show you how free and easy migration has allowed you to earn a living. 🧵

Populism remains an important necessary concept to understand current political transformations. But analysts need to move away from it as the main focus. Authoritarian nativism, white supremacy, racism, sexism and fascism are the ideologies at the core of the current erosion of liberal democracy 1/

A great and useful summary as to why science is inherently political, though only partisan when partisans make it so.

Give this a listen. Trump and Rubio are locking up people for engaging in speech, without any tangible evidence of wrongdoing or even hateful speech. So it's good to hear from the people they are demonizing.

We spent an absurd amount of time in 2022-24 denying this gap b/w consumer sentiment & behavior existed & inventing complex explanations like “felt inflation,” when the answers were right there. It was a sobering lesson in many things, including the politics of Narratives™️

Extremely cool FEDS Note that links consumer sentiment data to actually spending at the respondent level and shows that the disconnect between sentiment and spending post-COVID was extremely unique and driven by inflation perception not real incomes.

True. One difference: other aspiring autocrats asked themselves how the rest of the world might react; clearly not the case here…
It is remarkable (compared to other backsliding regimes) how brazen and transparent Trump is in targeting his "enemies." In Turkey, it would take months and an enterprising journalist to uncover that a university had its funds cut off, a firm blacklisted, contracts rescinded, or thousands fired.

NEW: The actions of Trump and Vance in recent weeks highlight something under-appreciated.

The American right is now ideologically closer to countries like Russia, Turkey and in some senses China, than to the rest of the west (even the conservative west).

3/ Meanwhile, TAN voters strongly favor pensions – more so than GAL voters. The picture is less clear for social assistance and unemployment benefits, but we uncover important age differences in how GAL voters see social assistance.

Updated daily, my dashboard tracks how much € German parties spend on targeted ads. For example 1M on “lookalike” audiences to reach people similar to a pre-defined audience (often supporters). 📊

But, honestly, the crisis is Trump ignoring absolutely bedrock constitutional principles (like the congressional power of the purse and birthright citizenship) and clear statutory text (like the Impoundment Control Act). It's not Trump ignoring some district judge.
