Claims:

1/ Continuing claims a hair above my benchmark, at 1.94M. (Will get revised down to ~1.93M next week.)

Due to residual seasonality there will probably be a small dip over the next few weeks, but flattish for the remainder of the year.

1/ The late spring continuing claims scare is fading. We saw a brief small acceleration in this data during late spring but now the growth rate is gradually moderating.

Didn't someone put out a thesis/analysis that the Spanish Flu epidemic would largely have been defeated by air conditioning?
I'm seeing some people claim "we didn't USED to need air conditioning before we RUINED THE PLANET" and uh, that is extremely inaccurate.

People used to die in droves during heat waves before air conditioning. This study found that AC "cut premature deaths on hot days in US by 80% since 1960."

Personal political preferences have no place in trading markets.

If your manager is showing signs of running money based on hope (or fear) of the political party in office, you should fire them.

There is so much wrong with the new tariff policy, it is hard to begin. First of all, it makes no sense to tariff something we will never produce in the US. I don't see bananas and coffee on the exempted list. 1/n

Democrats are famous for not being able to fight their way out a wet paper bag. This is because the DNC is controlled by corporations dummy. The polls for the upcoming Wisconsin judicial election should be a landslide, but is not. That means even after all this crazy Dems STILL WONT SHOW UP TO VOTE.

2013 - 2019 - 2025

See you in 2031?

One last whack on this dead horse. Here's a quick comparison between two-way wunderkind Macklin Celebrini and lazy, soft, irresponsible Connor Bedard.

They're both still kids. They're both on bad teams. They're both going to be great players. One's just on TV more often.

The new admin suggestion they will follow through on 25% MEX & CAN tariffs created a ripple in markets late yesterday.

While the moves were modest, USD rallied, stocks and bonds sold off, and gold rose, giving some market-based direction on possible tariff impacts.

I think I have pieced all of this together. Colombia accepts repatriated citizens regularly without incident. Like Stargate last weekend, Trump wanted another publicity stunt showing up instead with military planes. Petro said get fucked send them back through normal means, we won't take part

BLS chart thread! This was a good report.

1/ The unemployment rate ticked down (4.086%, the lowest since June).

I've been talking about stabilization in the labor market in 2025 but maybe it's starting early!

[Note, the Fed is expecting 4.3% next year.]

It's a good time to have a job (low layoffs) but a bad time to be looking for a new one (low hiring) and people with a job know it (low quits)
JOLTS update:

1/ Hiring was very weak in November - comparable to the early/mid 2010s, when the unemployment rate was above 8% (it's currently 4.2%).

Bill Ward in his wife's red tights.
Sabbath's 6th album may have been the last great one
of the Ozzy era. (TE and NSD are not bad)

Symptom Of The Universe ranks as the 2nd greatest riff of all time. Give it a listen. The album is there too.

My first #metalmonday post

Trouble formed in Aurora, IL in 1978.
Manic Frustration, their 5th LP (1992), is an
absolute burner. This track "The Sleeper" is
in my treadmill playlist forever, but a listen to
the entire album would be time well spent.

Something disorienting about getting older is seeing people 20+ years younger than you put out confident takes about a period of time that they didn’t live through but you did. I’m sure this only gets worse and worse.

Tons of press saying Buffet's recent cash surge is a signal to be followed. It's not. His cyclical market timing alpha is negative over the last 30 years.

Another example that for nearly all investors it's far better to just remain fully invested. Even for an oracle.
