If you missed it earlier this year, Andrew Ahn's sweet reimagining of THE WEDDING BANQUET has just arrived on Kanopy. It's free to stream without ads or subscriptions, all through participating libraries.

I feel like people on bluesky would particularly appreciate that this is a Twitter joke 14 years in the making.

Some guy tweeted at our shitty then-mayor that we should have a Robocop statue and he was like “thanks but no” and then other people made it actually happen, over the course of 14 years
The bronze statue depicting the eponymous cybernetic star of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 set-in-Detroit sci-fi satire was installed in Eastern Market on Wednesday, nearly 15 years after someone proposed it in a viral social media post.
Detroit finally has a RoboCop statue - Detroit Metro Times

#Avian flu has decimated world's largest breeding colony of southern elephant seals

The loss may threaten the population's future by reducing the number of surviving pups.

“With so many marginalized communities, we’re basically the oracles…we’re the ones who see shit before it happens.” In June 2020, I interviewed Alice Wong for TVU before she lost her ability to speak. I asked her how she’d first learned of SARS-CoV-2. She began with the 2016 election of Trump:

Apropos of frog suits, lots of talk about whether or not humor is useful for fighting authoritarians. Not only does it work, but it's a top tool. It can't be the only thing, but nothing can be the only thing. If you want to learn more, I wrote about it last year. buttondown.com/signs+wonder...

This week in 1988: 1,000+ ACT UP demonstrators shut down the FDA headquarters, demanding (and eventually winning) action on developing HIV/AIDS treatments. ACT UP's militant and creative actions always included powerful visual artwork, and paved the way for movements in the decades to come.

“Trad cath” is, weirdly, code for “unfamiliar with Catholicism”
Far-right Catholics freaking out about the Pope doing normal Pope things will always be entertaining.

The Pope blessed some water? Can you even imagine?

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

Intellectually: the equinox is the 22nd, we still have nearly three weeks of summer left.

Emotionally: planning stews, plotting Halloween costumes, listening to The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on repeat for two days straight.
