There are a couple of kids in my nephews's class who weren't born in the US, and the class has decided (w/o teacher input) that if ICE shows up in they're all going to pretend not to speak English. 10yos reinventing "I am Spartacus" because they don't want their friends to get disappeared.

"House Republicans worked through the night to advance a massive piece of legislation that might, if enacted, carry out the largest upward transfer of wealth in American history," writes Jonathan Chait:
The Largest Upward Transfer of Wealth in American History
House Republicans voted to advance a bill that would offer lavish tax cuts for the rich while slashing benefits for the poor.

when i was a child, my family took CHIP and food stamps. this shaped my entire orientation toward government programs (positive) in a way most pundits don't have access to. and also, not to brag, but i think my siblings and i are proof that the ROI on feeding children is very high
There is not a single congressional district in the U.S. where more than 15% of voters support cuts to SNAP, the federal program that provides food assistance to millions of low-income Americans.

Worried about the inability of governments to address inequality and climate catastrophe? Housing and healthcare? Schools and jobs? In June, Modern Money Lab’s Steven Hail is bringing two excellent interactive weekend seminars to London (UK).

This is how transformational medicine often works -- overlapping capacities imaginatively mobilized to solve an individual problem. This is exactly what the DOGE-Kennedy efforts are destroying.

My first dance on the national stage was predicting the giant Blue Wave of 2018 using negative partisanship.

I was able to say, months and months before Election Day that 1. Ds would flip the House 2. End up with about 40 seats.

They might outdo that in 2026.

@joshtpm.bsky.social has been right about this all along. Plus, when only one side is pushing, the reasonable takeaway: the other side is weak, especially for the vast majority of observers who are at most peripherally aware of what's happening.
It’s elementary. If only one side is pushing it will get a lot of its way. The only workable remedial action is to make clear to all relevant parties that there are two sides pushing. And act accordingly.
Key Democrats sent scathing letters to 5 top law firms demanding details on the lucrative deals they cut with Trump to avoid being punished by him.

Embedded in @stephaniekelton.bsky.social‘s dissection of nonsensical budget proposals and chaotic tariff policies is Larry Summers’s trenchant explanation of how trade with China really works and benefits the U.S. You’ll be smarter for reading/listening to both.
