Online age verification is not like "showing ID to buy alcohol" because

a) the liquor store doesn't get to scan your ID and store a digital copy of it forever in a database that will inevitably get hacked

b) you don't have to show ID to go to the library because they have cocktail recipe books

"Age verification" laws are actually "upload your ID or get your face scanned to access every website, ending anonymity and associating your identity with everything you do online" laws and if more people understood that they would not be down for this authoritarian nonsense

Disabled people are 11 times more likely to die during labor/in the postpartum period than non-disabled people. Better education and smashing ableism is how we get out of this horrible stat.

For the past year, I’ve been looking into the topic of disability and pregnancy for @motherjones.com 🧵
Pregnancy is a minefield when you're disabled
Few OB-GYNs get disability training—and their disabled patients are far likelier to die.

Americans’ awareness of our eugenics history is non-existent, so people don’t see it coming back.

”Farms for the defective” sounds like RFKj’s “wellness farms” no?

I think Ketanji Brown Jackson's dissents are an important exception to the "Supreme Court dissents don't matter" rule of thumb, because she is using them not to argue with the conservative justices, but to explain to the public that the conservative justices are liars and in the tank for Trump
Ketanji Brown Jackson Is Telling the Truth About the Supreme Court
The task of interpreting the law is inherently “political.” But no justice has been this comfortable saying so in public.

cw: eugenics, sterilization

Periodic reminder that fascism & eugenics are a significant part of United States history.
cw: eugenics, sterilization

Did you know we had a Eugenics Record Office from 1910-1939?

The superintendent of that office, Harry Laughlin, led the way with forced-sterilization laws, inspiring Hitler: bsky.app/profile/ashl....

The US and Germany recognized him as a leading scientist.

Here’s a snippet about Harry Laughlin, superintendent of the Eugenics Record Office for its entire existence 1910-1939.

“His model sterilization law became internationally renowned, eventually taken up by Adolf Hitler in his own bid for a national racial purity.”

There is no justification for killing wolves — wolf hunts are trophy hunts.

Wolves live in balance with nature — they aren’t a threat to people or livestock.

Wolves are worth far more alive than dead and support balanced, healthy ecosystems. Empathy is the way forward.
