39. "Paprika" by Japanese Breakfast (2021)
still have too many songs in my "maybe" pile and going through Choice Paralysis so let's get something from the "for sure" pile on my list. One of the best album openers of the decade! Thusfar! But probably still five years from now!

38. "Bloom" by Necry Talkie (2023)
anyway the last pick was a doom vortex pick and I think sometimes it's good to surrender to the doom vortex, but other times you gotta snap out of it and that's what high-energy J-rock is for, baby

37. "Mahashmashana" by Father John Misty (2024)
I feel like I typically kind of brush FJM off, but boy was there never a better time to put out "what if there were a George Harrison/Phil Spektor joint about the 21st century careening into oblivion" than the back half of 2024.

36. "XS" by Rina Sawayama (2020)
there's a great TikTok post about '00s fashion that includes the line "I think about how we really wore every accessory at the *same time,*" and that is this song, and that's why this song triumphs at the revivalism game it's playing. More. More!

35. "Dumb Feeling" by Mei Semones (2025)
Is 2025 the year of delightfully bossa nova-forward indie pop? According to most of the charts probably not, but according to the stats of what songs from this year I've put on repeat the most, possibly! I'm still gathering the facts, mind.

34. "After the Earthquake" by Alvvays (2022)
Really love this one. Lot of fun jangling into time standing still on the bridge into a sudden exhilarating freefall for the last thirty seconds. Are you awake now?

33. "This Enchanted" by Hatchie (2021)
picking my favorite Hatchie song from this decade in honor of the new album which I'm definitely gonna listen to in full sometime soon I swear

32. "The Adults Are Talking" by The Strokes (2020)
Looking forward to these guys turning up in like 2031 with another album that, again, has a supernaturally catchy opening track that gets stuck in my head for years (and I fail to remember anything else about it but that's fine).

31. "Dreamstate" by Kelly Lee Owens (2024) (11 PTS)
currently reeling from the likely true nightmare work week of this year's Fall Busy Season so I'm falling behind, so I might as well post the song that I listened to in a trance to survive *last* year's busy season to right the ship.

30. "Chosen to Deserve" by Wednesday (2023)
One of my favorite recent combinations of a songwriter and a topic is Karly Hartzman listing anecdotes of dumb things she or her friends have done/maybe still do, in song form. They often build to a point but I'd take em without it too.

29. "Leave the Door Open" by Silk Sonic (2021)
I respect Bruno Mars' work as a bankable pop hired gun but honestly was delighted by this vanity side project and wish he and Paak did more of it. Also the karaoke video background visuals on this Grammy performance are great.

28. "Introvert" by Blue Wednesday (2020)
just as I wouldn't have felt right doing a 2020s song list without a KPop rep, I also feel like it wouldn't be right if I didn't have a Lofi Beats to Study and/or Nap To rep. The utilitarian subgenre of the decade! Also this one's very pretty.

27. "I Want You (Fever)" by Momma (2025)
it's 2025 and there are precious few stores that sell CDs in malls but Mall Rock persists and I think that's beautiful. One of the songs that came out this year where the chorus got stuck in my head immediately.

26. "CATFISH" by Doechii (2024)
probably the best one-two punch in any album this decade so far IMO

Honorable Mention 5/5. "Murder Most Foul" by Bob Dylan (2020)
look I gotta give it something, I got more enjoyment out of building up to its eventual appearance in last year's #XPNCountdown on this site than I get out of some songs I do actually listen to regularly.

Honorable Mention 4/5. "Tick Tock" by Aldous Harding (2022)
Really dug this when it popped up in the Pop Poll for 2022 and I've definitely had at least an hour or two in the last year where I've just gone back and listened to it every fifteen minutes or so, figure that merits an HM!
