With Earth crossing Saturn's ring plane, we're being treated to some lovely moon and shadow transits. Titan is currently casting its shadow on the disk every 18 days. With gear too long unused, I managed to catch last night's transit. Color is in Vis light, Gray in IR. 🔭 🧪 #astrophotography
The planet Saturn captured in IR (wavelength 685nm - ~950nm) and, so, presented in grayscale against a black background. The planet is tilted so that the rings stretch from lower left to upper right across the disk. The rings are seen very close to edge on so that they appear to be a thin streak. Across the disk, one can just make out the shadow cast by the rings just below the razor thin rings themselves. Titan is just off the disk at about the ten o'clock position and is casting a shadow onto the disk at about the ten thirty position. The moon is a small gray disk, the shadow a completely black circle on the gray disk, which is covered in darker and lighter bands running parallel to the rings. The planet Saturn captured in visible light and, so, presented in color against a black background. Saturn's disk is a banded yellow gold. Two equatorial bands, running parallel to the rings are darker brown than the rest of the bands. The planet is tilted so that the rings stretch from lower left to upper right across the disk. The rings are seen very close to edge on so that they appear to be a thin streak. Across the disk, one can just make out the shadow cast by the rings just below the razor thin rings themselves. Titan is just off the disk at about the nine o'clock position and is casting a shadow onto the disk at about the ten o'clock position. The moon is a small orange disk, the shadow a completely black circle.

Giant, newborn stars here are carving away surrounding gas & dust. The bright pair at center is two of the most massive stars known. The dark spire is 50 trillion kilometers tall! 🧪🔭

JWST captured this sparkling scene of star birth in Pismis 24, a young star cluster about 5,500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Scorpius. This region is one of the best places to explore the properties of hot young stars and how they evolve.

Saturn makes up for a small ring tilt with Titan shadow transits! I captured this last night around midnight. Titan, its shadow, and Saturn's shadow on the rings brings out the 3rd dimension. Titan is larger than Mercury and its atmosphere is thicker than Earth's. Details in ALT #astrophotography

In its third decade of continuous human presence, the space station has a far-reaching impact as a microgravity lab hosting technology, demonstrations, and scientific investigations from a range of fields. I captured 60+ hours of exposures over 12 nights to create this 8-panel mosaic of the entire Veil Nebula. I used HSO filters for the nebula and RGB filters for stars. Image shows how H (red), S (green), and O (blue) mix in the debris in the supernova remnant. Capture details in ALT #astrophotography
an emission nebula resulting from the debris from an exploded star. The atoms glow in colors that create yellow, magenta, blue, green, and a touch of cyan. The wispy nature resembles smoke from a blown out candle. Image created from 34 of the best 50 hrs of 4 min exposures through HSO filters and 3 hours of 10 s exposures in RGB filters for the stars. Taken with a Takahashi TSA 120 telescope with a 0.7x reducer and ZWO ASI2600MM camera.

Last quarter moon imaged from Edinburgh at 8:10 today with #Televue NP101 🔭 using IR Pass filter and #Touptek 585 mono camera. Best 100 frames from 1000 frame video stacked and sharpened using AstroSurface, and levels adjusted in PixInsight. #astrophotography
Last quarter Moon on 17 July 2025. The Appenine mountain range sweeps down towards the rayed crater Copernicus in the upper centre of the image. Clavius is prominent in the heavily cratered southern highlands, and the Alpine valley is just disappearing into the liunnar night near the crater Plato.
