Radically pedestrian urban planning.

I took a picture earlier this week that I think encapsulates the isolation and danger of living in a city that doesn’t #plowthesidewalks and a neighborhood where reactionaries want to tear out an under-construction safety project on Archer Avenue.

It’s a message about priorities.
It’s hard to tell what drivers were honking for at the Archer for Everybody rally, but the tow truck driver seemed happy.

Flyer for anti- versus pro-Archer traffic safety project rally, provided by Astroturf-free sustainable transportation advocates. Unlike at least one of the NIMBY organizers, their event isn't being promoted by lobbyists who funded their political campaign!

Here's the current view of the Archer Avenue safe streets project under construction, to the southwest of Kedzie Avenue.

Hey @nbcchicago.com let me fix that chyron for ya...

The truck has a grill that is taller than this woman, which should also be illegal, but the responsibility to safely operate it falls to a HUMAN DRIVER. The driver is at fault, the truck is inanimate.

One safety island removed, another’s days are numbered.

When someone gets hit here (and they will be someone hit here) we’re going to call it a classic Pat Dowell Right Hook 🥊

New flyer promoting the Monday 12/15 rally in support of the Archer Avenue traffic safety project, 3868 S. Archer Ave. in Brighton Park. The car activists are showing up around 4:30 PM, but it looks like Safe Streets booster are assembling at 4 PM.

I’m pretty sure I already had reached 12% of all Divvy stations before @davidpowe.bsky.social went and had a bunch more installed this year!

My problem with the recurring argument that “no one bikes in winter”:

- The city is responsible for clearing protected bike lanes.
- Private property owners are responsible for most sidewalks.

It’s safer for pedestrians to have a clear path that isn’t in the road. Make Archer safe for everybody!

This kind of mixed-use, walkable bookstore is prohibited in most places.

All I want for christmas is more housing units built by-right.
By my count, Chicago needs *261* more units permitted in the next few weeks for 2025 to have more permitted new construction homes than 2024

So that’s fun.

Chicago's system of aldermanic prerogative is the opposite of a "clear, transparent decision-making process".
2️⃣ For successful network planning, community collaboration, and project development, cities need to have a clear, transparent decision-making process.

I'm still curious about these.

It says Teleste, which has been the contractor for security cameras. Intersection was the contractor for train arrival boards.

Also, there's a cursor on the upper right corner, so it seem like this is just showing a live desktop slideshow.

And, I didn't see ads?
A CTA station that actually has bus arrivals on a modern live screen?

(3 bunched Lawrence buses were in fact due)

This cut could end the Better Streets for Buses program, canceling BRT again.

“CTA will explore ways to incorporate improvements as part of street resurfacing, Complete Streets and other planned roadway projects (adding) only a “marginal cost to incorporate” bus-related improvements, Meter said.”

What a difference a decade makes. Roger Romanelli is in clearly in favor of bus lanes now, let's build Ashland BRT.

Right now, Chicago City Council is weighing drastic cuts to the very safety programs that have driven this unprecedented drop in severe injuries and fatalities on our streets — cuts that would mean more dangerous speeding, more violent crashes, and more families grieving loved ones taken too soon.
