Ultimately the Democratic party is not amenable to a rank-and-file takeover like the 2010 Tea Party did with the GOP (at least not without the kind of billionaire backing that the Tea Party had). People should agitate for electoral reform that gives us a multi-party democracy imo.

Caddo (the blue armpit of Louisiana) makes more money from agriculture than neighboring Bossier parish (red)
California alone produces a third of all the food America eats. So this is a lie.
But let’s break down the food produced by the red states:
Guess what percent is harvested by people from Latin America?

It'd be kinda cool to see what would happen if the US stopped subsidizing agriculture

I think it just bears repeating sometimes that democratic centralism doesn't actually work. It just flat out doesn't. There is not even a "successful revolution" that you can attribute democratic centralism to. It's an organizational fetish that's generative of sectarianism.

We need left-wingers to build out some homeschool and micro-school curricula because the state of public education in this country is sorry as fuck.

Obvi capital is wrought up in the political power of the capitalist class, but if it were straightforwardly profitable to de-carbonize at a sufficient pace to avoid climate change related social and environmental costs, capital would be doing so with gusto.
To put it another way, *capital* is perfectly capable of organizing decarbonization. The problem is *capital-owners*, who are political actors and not just the embodiments of the accumulation process. Elon Musk is symptomatic here.

Starting 15 years ago Republicans started applying purity tests, embraced their extreme base and primaried moderate members. Now they are… in charge of three branches of government and doing fine. They are in charge, check it out.

I don't know what the Senate is going to do. But if they do in fact fold in exchange for nothing, they will be living up to past performance. To expect the Senate to carry out the will of the American people is to misunderstand why it was created in the first place.

At NeurIPS is important -- it's not like we were publishing in some other venue, or just posting commentary on the internet.
But "AI" isn't a scientific, academic field anymore.

"His ideas won't work" is funny because SHREVEPORT LOUISIANA has free busses
theres a whole category of newstertainment thats gotta go. and its "ask a really rich freak who is also evil and directly stealing from you what hes seen on the computer lately that has made him feel bad." the only -- ONLY -- story about this guy worth exploring is: he is getting rich spying on you

It's probably a little bit of survivorship bias. The people who couldn't afford healthcare for treatable illnesses, just for one example, from 1945 to now, are all dead.
People need to realize their ideas about past "middle class prosperity" are mostly nonsense.

What, did we invent cold fusion?
things that arent the future of civilization
- chatbots
- crypto
- robot butlers
- cars that sorta drive autonomously as long as youre paying attention for when they fail and almost kill a bunch of people
things that actually are the future of civilization
- free clean energy

279% interest is the kinda thing the A-Team kills you for
The Flex Loan, a new type of payday loan pioneered by Advance Financial in Tennessee, allows residents to borrow up to $4,000 at a 279.5% interest rate.
It has burdened low-income borrowers while generating huge profits for lenders.

sorry, but unprofitable businesses should be allowed to go out of business.
my hot AI take is that regardless of how we feel about it, bailing out the big AI companies may be *necessary* to avoid long-term systemic harm to real people

I don't understand the Lina Khan hate because I think all I recognize her name for is using the FTC to go after scammers and fraudsters. But, given that, it would make some sense for that to be a red alert for certain members of the NY Democrat party.
it is very amusing that the DC abundance bros are mad about Lina Khan being one of Zohran’s transition co-chairs even though the other co-chair is Maria Torres Springer, NYC’s ultimate abundance YIMBY technocrat

I've thought about this for days on days on days and I've concluded it is not possible to game out how infinite free electricity will change the world, but it will, dramatically.
We are going to live in a world where the the marginal cost of electricity is very close to zero
