Similar to what I’ve previously written, but Ian’s a climate scientist (I’m a biologist)

One reason there’s a focus on methane compared to carbon is it’s the greenhouse gas with much larger effect: you get much more bangs-for-your-bucks per unit tackling it. If we don’t tackle methane, we’ll have to make vastly bigger efforts on the other pollutants.

We know what we need to do,

I thought I’d have a go at answering the question: what’s the flow on effect on emissions budgets from the methane cuts?

The answer was worse than I had anticipated

Now that NZ dairy farmers are set to get a windfall, perhaps the current government can ask they get back to doing all we can to mitigate methane emissions?

It’s perhaps the biggest "putting it back into the community" they could offer.
If climate policy had a “best buy,” it might be methane cuts

Global methane mitigation has a benefit–cost ratio >6:1, even before accounting for near-term climate feedbacks

A strong case: it’s among the most efficient levers in climate policy

The Luxon Govt’s bonkers plan to build 17 Big New Roads that we don’t really need will cost us at least $44 billion.

That’s enough to rebuild Dunedin Hospital 23 times over or to massively improve public transport and cycle infrastructure in all our cities. #nzpol

It's hilarious that Luxon claims there are no hiring freezes in our health services, because everyone who works in healthcare knows well that funding cuts have meant staff are not being replaced, and haven't been for nearly two years. Call it what you will, but that's a hiring freezes to me. #nzpol
