Aurora Borealis in south-central Wisconsin on November 12, 2025. The second night of the geomagnetic storm (we were socked in with clouds on the 11th).

@joshuajfriedman.com do you have an aurora feed?

Last night, the Northern Lights showed their true colors over campus and bathed the sky in Badger red. We’re still in awe.

Some parts of the state are waking up to snow on the ground on this cold November 9.

While not a big snowmaker, it’s the first measurable snowfall across southern Wisconsin, and wind chills have dipped into the single digits and teens across the state.

Stay warm this weekend!

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Dodgers on their World Series win. As a Brewers fan, my favorite memory of the 2025 postseason will be Game 1 of the NLCS when I was on the field before the game unfurling a giant U.S. flag in the outfield at American Family Field.

On Saturday, August 30 the Mariner’s Inn ends a 59 year run as one of Madison’s most beloved supper clubs. My parents had a tradition of taking us there once or twice a year, and except for Covid, I’ve kept that tradition going. Tonight we went there one last time. I will miss it very much.

In 1998 I fractured my skull and for five days in the neuro ICU, all they gave me was coffee and jello. I was just aware enough to tell when they’d gone through the available flavors and started over. Ever since then, to this day I can’t eat jello.
A cool thing in food aversion is that humans are very, very good at learning to become disgusted by food that has sickened them. The ones who didn't, died before having kids.

You literally have hundreds of thousands of years of ancestors telling you to never eat sushi again after having bad sushi

Party lines in northern Wisconsin. “If it rings twice, pick it up. Any other number of rings ignore it. And if you pick up the phone to make a call and hear someone talking, hang up and try later.”
What’s a real thing from your childhood that kids these days would find completely foreign?

Like, how we used to be able to walk right up to the gate to meet our family coming off a flight.

Or how we had to pick a spot to meet at the theater BEFORE we went.
