A network of 78 weather and soil monitoring stations in Wisconsin. We're growing with the support of the USDA Rural Partnerships Institute and Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation.
This map of storm reports shows just how localized lake effect snow can be.
It's all highly dependent on where the band comes in, and you can see a significant gradient of snow accumulations over just a couple miles.

Some parts of the state are waking up to snow on the ground on this cold November 9.
While not a big snowmaker, it’s the first measurable snowfall across southern Wisconsin, and wind chills have dipped into the single digits and teens across the state.
Stay warm this weekend!

First snow of the season is expected tonight! It won’t be much, but you might still be able to measure it. Do you know how?

Here's the latest update about the potential for snow across southern Wisconsin this weekend.
Snow accumulation of less than an inch is most likely, especially with the soil temperatures still well above freezing.
Bigger story: cold with single digit wind chills Sunday and Monday.

No doubt you've heard there's a chance of snow this weekend across southern Wisconsin. We're not going to put up any forecast totals, but it doesn't look like a big accumulation event right now.
The bigger story will be the cold: our first real winter-like weather this weekend.

I'm excited to say I'm a candidate for the Board of Directors - hopefully I get more than my vote, but it'll be tough since I'm running against the incomparable Kim Klockow McClain!

We love the “super network” of ASOS, AWOS, RAWS, and Wisconet stations. It provides a very high resolution view of the weather across Wisconsin.
All told, it’s close to 200 stations that have almost every acre of Wisconsin land within 20 miles of a weather station.

58 airport weather stations are going to go offline - primarily in North Carolina and Maryland.
While each state has mesonets (ECOnet in NC and the Maryland Mesonet in MD), mesonets should supplement the existing surface observation infrastructure.
That's what we're doing in Wisconsin.

Mild temperatures, low relative humidity, and gusty winds are leading to elevated fire concerns today.
Even though the fuels (grasses, cropland, brush) aren't too prone to catching fire, worsening drought will make them more susceptible.
Be careful with open flames.

Thick frost out there this morning. A combination of yesterday’s rain, the overnight temperatures in the 20s, and - especially over southern Wisconsin - dense fog allowed a thick layer of ice to form.
High wind gusts expected over northern parts of the state - the Gales of November are here.

Thousands upon thousands of observations each day around the world…but still so many more observations that we could be taking.

United States Army Signal Corps observers at 24 sites around the country simultaneously made weather reports and transmitted them to Washington, where a national weather map would be drawn. This started the process of sending out weather reports by telegraph to metropolitan newspapers.

We're kind of excited to hear that people have been opening their kids' Halloween candy to find there are weather stations inside.
