I think this is meant as a compliment of the CBS newsroom.
so here’s the thing, Bari, you’re running an organization full of weapons-grade gossips who hate you www.nytimes.com/2025/10/19/b...

Way too long
It took 20 years to go from Dan Rather to Bari Weiss.

A new effort to chill speech from the Face Mask Gang.
Oh no DHS is upset that people are saying mean things about ICE. Im sure this won’t generate a Streisand Effect or anything. www.dhs.gov/news/2025/09...

You will be STUNNED to know that the misquotation has not gone unnoticed on the other platform. Which, look, it is a misquotation! Presented and widely received as a real one, in a tense context. Not great!
A strange part of my job is spending more than a few fleeting seconds wondering what to make of the fact that the quote from Kirk for which Attiah was (wrongly per what I understand of it) apparently dismissed from WaPo is not exactly what Kirk said.

Pray tell, what murder weapon would suggest a left wing killer? Are certain guns left-coded?
Sure, if that's all we knew about the guy, then it would be reasonable. But that's not all we know about him.

One key fact is that he used a rifle to kill somebody. That should start your Bayesian prior at like 85% chance he's not left wing.
Can we at least concede that it’s reasonable to suspect, as a starting point, that the man who killed a far-right figure, and left several seemingly anti-fascist messages, was motivated by antipathy for that figure from the left? Doesn’t mean it’s 100% confirmed. But reasonable

Bari deserves every cent and CBS News deserves everything coming to it. But almost as delicious? The bitterness about to be unleashed from those with a fraction of her talent and multiples of her self regard.

Would you like to put some money on this prediction? I will, for the other side.
I’m pretty sure SCOTUS will see that the transfer of power won’t happen and so will find a way to “legally” un-require it.

Because if a coup is legal it’s not a coup.
Thinking about the DC takeover in light of Jan. 6.

How will the next legally required transition of power go?

Things are looking up for the Washington Post, at least in the opinion section.
It’s been very interesting to see which of my former Post colleagues opted not to take the buyout.

The flip side of this, of course, is the enormous outcry whenever the Trump admin attempts to defund Harvard or Columbia. Is that attention similarly disproportionate?
one of the things that gets me about so many of the pundits who pontificate about "higher education" when they really mean a handful of elite private institutions is that most of them live within driving distance of either a community college or a non-selective public institution

“A global minimum tax on the ultrarich could change planetary politics.” This may be the ultimate example of confusing cause and effect.
A global minimum tax on the ultrarich could change planetary politics. Right now South Africa, Chile, France, and Spain are pushing for it
France could raise around €20 billion per year from this tax

That’s half of the €40B the government is looking for this year

Globally? $302–377 billion could be raised—every year

From the ultra-rich. Who currently pay very little.

Offer not valid for yesterday’s district court TRO about OBB’a defunding of Planned Parenthood.
The thing to understand is that district court judges have to follow the law and Supreme Court Justices get to just make up the law.

again, four movies of death and destruction make total and complete sense in response to the murder of a puppy.
There's a great piece (I think in Vulture) where they talk about being worried during test screenings that audiences wouldn't understand John Wick's motivation, and then every audience was like "No, totally get it. They murdered his dog so he killed like 75 people. Makes perfect sense"

Very much enjoying certain lefties coming around to the argument that big funding increases for government agencies risks Nazism. That used to be argued exclusively by the right.
this is the level of funding where all the possibilities for American politics that have been described as hyperbolic over the past decades - the comparisons to Nazi Germany and other nightmares of the 20th century - become logistically possible and politically likely
If the GOP reconciliation bill passes, ICE gets through FY2029:

- $45 billion for detention, on top of the current annual budget of $3.4 billion
- $14.4 billion for transportation and removal, on top of the current annual budget of $750 million
- $8 billion for hiring/retention
- Billions more.
