I went through years of therapy that aimed to convince me that people were generally good & the pandemic has unraveled all of it. Like no, 12-year-old me was actually right to be suspicious of everyone because it turns out people value eating in restaurants above human lives.

So @profgabriele.com and I have this feeling that giant popular history books are more owned than actually read. Which is not necessarily a problem but should at least be considered.

took the temp over on Vichy Twitter and main discourse was a) straight up *howling* KKK-grade racism and Nazi-grade antisemitism and b) people flipping out at a historian for criticizing the Soviet empire

on one hand referring to middle eastern people as insects is the sort of dehumanizing rhetoric that facilitates mass bloodshed. on the other i sort of relate to being on a deadline and then you learn about a cool new wasp and you want to talk about it and you get a little carried away

When I discussed Rawls in the 1980s and 90s with German and French scholars I was often amazed they had seen subtleties I missed. Then I found out the 1975 German and the 1986 French translations were based on the revised edition we didn’t get until 1999. A trick more suited to Borges than Rawls.

Never forget.

At the start of my 1st date with E, then a serving British Army officer, I asked, 'OK, Bloody Sunday, what's your view?'

It was a go/no go question for continuing the date. (God we were both GAGGING for a drink)

His answer centred human rights, accountability and rule of law.

As Derry marches in memory of Bloody Sunday today, a reminder that its Inquiry found:

- the killings were unjustified
- none of the 14 dead (7 of whom were children) had guns
- no warnings were given
- no soldiers were under threat
- the troops were the first to open fire.
