Happy anniversary to my favorite copy editor comment of all time.

"You use 'long eighteenth century' a lot in this book, but each century is exactly as long as another."

I’m convinced the “do audiobooks count as reading?” argument all derives from those mid-90s summer reading pizza challenges.

Folks - we’re all in our 30s and 40s now. It’s no longer a competition.

Go buy your favorite pie with your adult money and let people enjoy books however they want.

I’m pretty sure that if some CEO got fired from his job & on his way out he told a mob of crazies to show up with zip ties, flag poles and tasers and to bash in the windows & smear poop on the walls, that he wouldn’t get hired back a few years later, but what the hell do I know.

i feel like smartphones came on the scene and all of a sudden no one, young and old, needed to learn anything ever again. bring back mr. wizard, how its made, and school house rock for everyone. maybe even drunk history just as a starting point.
TIL that one reason raw milk is having a comeback is a lot of people don't know what pasteurization is. They think it's adding "chemicals" not a rapid heat treatment

Remember the day the Brexit vote came in and the most googled thing was “what’s the EU?”

Media does not exist to inform us, certainly less so in the US it seems. It’s just a circus.
But one of those ones that abuses the animals, not a fun one.
looks like the cable news anchors are finally asking minor questions like “what does a mass deportation actually look like” and “are you going to deport citizen children?”

It’s a commonplace to say that the English don’t learn enough about European history at school. And it’s probably true. But the other day I spoke to a Scottish colleague who told me that he learned literally zero English history at his school in Glasgow("except a few battles we won against them”).

Today in 1971, the United States conducted its largest-ever underground nuclear test. A LIM-49A Spartan antiballistic missile carrying a W71 thermonuclear warhead was lowered into a 7.5-foot-wide, 5,873-foot-deep shaft beneath Amchitka Island, Alaska, and detonated. The yield was about 5 Megatons.
