“What do we want?”
“A mutually beneficial and balanced resolution that takes into account the diversity of overlapping but sometimes conflicting societal needs!”
“When do we want it?”
“Within a reasonable time frame!”

Replace “Dems” for “mainstream parties” and “GOP” for “far right” and you have West European politics.
American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

Today I learned:

Tsundoku (Japanese term) - piling up books with the promise that I'm reading them. Really, I am. I just read slower than I acquire them.

Antilibrary (Taleb) - this process is great because the unread books remind us of all the things we still have to learn.

I feel seen.

Republicans are unprepared for Democrats who fight back, much less play the offense, but this is what it looks like.
Totally! I thought him using the famous Mario Cuomo quote “You campaign in poetry. You govern in prose” is one of the greatest fuck yous ever. Hope Andrew enjoyed it.

The NYT Editorial Board has compiled a list of 12 markers of democratic erosion. It finds that the US has regressed on all 12.

The Board concludes: “Our country is still not close to being a true autocracy”. Really? This kind of wishful thinking is dangerous.

Pete Buttigieg is probably the best communicator in U.S. politics today. He does not just criticize Trump behavior and policies, he uses them to (1) show the deeper problems with them; and (2) to show how he/we should do better.
Trump building himself a new gold-plated ballroom at the White House shows what he really cares about - which is definitely not you.

Tiny #academicrant - I'm stunned that the author portal at Taylor&Francis doesn't allow multiple email addresses. Just - why?

I've had four (4) different institutional emails recently and I just can't get everything together at T&F. It makes publishing so much more complicated than it needs to be.
elmo from sesame street is disappointed in you and looking up
Alt: elmo from sesame street is disappointed in taylor & francis publishing and wishes they would allow multiple email addresses in their author portal, which would let mobile and early career scholars move around institutions (as they need to) without having to fight every time they try to publish. The problem is that now there is a mismatch between the email address on the manuscript and the email address on the account, and so the production editors will freak out etc etc and it will take a long time to figure out. All of it totally unnecessary and disappointing

Just a bit depressing that I fought this one - checks watch - 23 years ago.

And at that time I met someone who had been doing it since the 1990s.

And they told me that this fight has been going on since 1977.

Just checked Wiki and, yup, up to 2017, repubs tried to open ANWR fifty times. 50.

And Congress is letting it happen.

What we have here, in addition to Trump's gaudy, vacuous bric-a-brac he has glued to wall in the Cabinet Room, is our monumentally incompetent SecDef telling the most unhinged president in history about an attack on another civilian small boat, this time in the Pacific.

There are laws about how to interdict suspected criminals on the high seas.

There are laws about how to renovate federal buildings.

There are laws about how not to monetize the presidency.

There are laws. We should enforce them. And not normalize the flagrant violation of them in the newspapers.
