It's easy to understand when there are moments where this is hardest.

Scientific research on history has shown that large genocidal empires, the seeds of civilization, form where there are large cultural gaps that make it almost impossible for people to understand each other...

Finally an official confirmation that anti-drone systems from Polish APS are used in Ukraine.

Unofficially we knew there are several in use as well as possibly 100s of radars from this manufacturer in Gdynia.

Without an alien "other" to dwarf the relatively minor differences between Greek city-states, they continued to focus on fighting/dehumanizing each other with Sparta famously enslaving fellow Greek city-states & uniquely/horrifically declaring war on defenseless subjects

The Peloponnesian league didn't fare better. After they won, Sparta tried to impose their will on the other city states which resulted in the alienation of allies such as Corinth and Thebes.

The latter would eventually break the back of Spartan power over Greece

What do you mean, it’s just a military adventure into a mountainous region with an unpopular and tyrannical local government (literally, in the Greek case) everyone assumed would collapse that ends in disaster and quagmire and whose knock on effects result in political instability back home

Members originally had no disagreements with imperial expansion; it was an imperial nation in its first stages.

Silly, that's not why states (Which the league can be considered) rise & fall.

What happened was a smaller-scale version of this. Once the Persians were gone, Athens acted selfishly which strained & shattered the alliance.

I had a classics professor who argued the Delian League collapsed under the weight of its own contradiction. The Melian dialogues showed a polity preaching freedom and mutual defense practicing imperial politics will inevitably strain and collapse as what is and what is supposed grow further apart.

hard these days to see the achievement of being on people's lips after death as becoming an avatar of timeless virtue, rather than simply narcissistic self aggrandizement & the wealth to get it spoken as one wants

The best thing about Thucydides Peloponnesian war, is how many different people it brings together. Historians, Political Scientists, IR, NatSec, Literary scholars... there is so much to interpret and discuss. A timeless text.

I visited the Polish memorial in Monte Casino, Italy. The inscription reads:

"For our freedom and yours, we, soldiers of Poland, gave our souls to God, our bodies to the earth of Italy, and our hearts to Poland."
Arlington in USA: "Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God"

Also quite moving.

I love Greek. Language of dual meanings and hidden messages.
I recently encountered that quote while reading about various monuments to unknown soldiers. That same quote is written on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens. (My admittedly incomplete understanding of what it means: Great men's "tomb monument" is their legacy and effect on the whole world.)

I am convinced that Thucydides account of Pericles is a warning of the dangers of "great men". Was as a student, still am today.

Thucydides wrote that once Pericles became the ruler of Athens, Athenian democracy devolved into a rule by the ambitious, deluded, and vain.

There is this great line on the funeral of Pericles in Thucydides Peloponnesian war.

“for illustrious men have the whole world as their tomb”

No one can convince me that this isn't a hidden critique of Pericles. The "illustrious men" who burn down everything for their vanity. Love it.

There is debate over if Thucydides praises Pericles, or not. I believe Thucydides criticised Pericles, in a very ironic, but on the point way. Painting him as the man who led Athens to it's doom.

It was "phoney" only in the west.

It was a full on total war and genocide for us in Poland.

As to Ukraine, Polish army were unable do to any offensive in 2023 as our artillery, 300 tanks and bigly big chunk of GBAD fallen of the trucks in Lviv in 2022...
The "Phoney War" is what the time period from September 1939 to May 1940 on the Western front is called. With France and Britain sitting back and doing nothing to save Poland, and then just waiting and doing little to nothing, as Germany built up it's forces to attack France.
