The CDC oversees larger-scale operations that cannot simply be handed off to states or individual organizations. Public health responses must be coordinated at the national level in order to be effective, since health risks are shared across state borders.

Kennedy hearing deepens crisis over dismantling of CDC leadership - health scholar explains why the agency’s ability to protect public health is compromised
The CDC’s current crisis has been building since Trump’s first week in office and boiled over after Kennedy fired the agency’s newly appointed director.

Correct, micro decisions in the hood separate a good tech from a veteran. Nothing will replace repetition and understanding of ascetic technique that is learned over time. The best practice for new techs is to learn from veterans with an open mind. Many micro decisions seem pedantic to newbies.
Very true. In my experience, there are three aspects of “good hands”. 1. Be low entropy: when in doubt, do things in an orderly manner. 2. Make good micro decisions: observe what matters and what doesn’t in any given protocol. 3. Make fewer errors. Of these, I think 2 is the most learnable.
Every few months the "good lab hands" thing comes up and it misses a key point: you can learn to have good hands. Training matters.

Good hands aren't some magic gift from the PCR gods, you have to develop them through directed repetitive practice, like any other skill

Tuberculosis Spawning in Crowded, Dirty ICE Detention Centers

and Trump sends in the military to take over the city.

But when thousands of CDC employees are targeted in a shooting,
federal buildings are attacked, and a first responder is killed...

there’s not even a statement from the White House?😡

CDC Public Health Service physicians are being deployed to migrant detention centers. We know you face a difficult choice: go in an attempt to provide medical care or refuse to participate. If you go, DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. We need proof of human rights violations perpetrated by this administration.

3 days ago RFK Jr. told the CDC to stop recommending water fluoridation, claiming it was a neurotoxin (this is a lie).

Turns out he also just eliminated the CDC’s entire Lead Program, and now lead poisoned children in Milwaukee are just on their own. Lead IS a neurotoxin and harms brain development
CDC denies help for lead poisoning in Milwaukee schools due to layoffs
The CDC rejected a request for help "due to the complete loss" of their lead poisoning experts.

Trump’s idea of “making America healthy”? Cutting labs that track STD & hepatitis outbreaks.
Our hot take? That’s really, really stupid.

“Public health communications should be about empowering people with reliable, science-based information, so they can make their own health decisions,” he added. “Unfortunately, we can’t count on Kennedy’s HHS for that anymore.”
CDC communications director Kevin Griffis resigns
Griffis wrote in a Washington Post op-ed that he believes public health policy must always ‘be guided by facts and not fantasy.’

We take the wins as they come!
A bright light in a dark moment: The price of the critical TB drug bedaquiline has now dropped to $90 per adult treatment course for TB, a 54% reduction since just 2023.

This is a huge win for @tbfighters.org and the TB activism community generally. www.stoptb.org/what-we-do/f... (1/2)...

We worked for months with USAID to build an $85,000,000 project to end TB in two regions of the Philippines.

The project is funded by private money, the Philippine government, and matching USAID funds.

It could provide a blueprint for eliminating TB worldwide--except it's...not happening.

Tuberculosis is treated with antibiotics. To be effective, these medications need to be taken daily for 4–6 months.

I have proudly been a scientist my whole life. We are now watching the deliberate destruction of American science at the hands of the corrupt regime. Data is disappearing, young scientists are not getting paid, free speech is crushed. We can fix this, but we don't have much time to undo the harm. 🧪🌏
