I’ve spent the last 18 months writing about the Roman Empire. In some ways, we’ve progressed immeasurably far in the last 1500 years. But there are still too many things about contemporary politics that I think would have felt all too familiar to them. I persist in my optimism that we can do better.

At this point the only thing I can think of to be thankful for - the ONLY thing - is that this is objectively the best time in all of history to be alive on earth as a human being, by almost every possible measure. Other than that, I’m at a loss.
