I have been forced to move my classes online.

Researchers at MD Anderson are leading the way with studies like the Diet and Immune Effects Trial (DIET), which explores how diet may impact response to cancer treatment.

New results from this important study will be shared at #ASCO25. Learn more: http://spr.ly/63324N2YtA #EndCancer
Nutrivention: Food as medicine
Nutrivention is using dietary interventions to impact response to cancer treatment. Increasing fiber intake can improve response rates for patients undergoing immunotherapy treatment for melanoma because fiber is a food source for beneficial bacteria in our gut microbiome. Increasing fiber intake to even just 30 grams per day may lead to positive changes.

In advance of #ASCO25, @cmannunziata.bsky.social told me, “We are worried that the cuts to the NIH will drastically impact our ability to do research, to find these new molecular mechanisms of cancer and develop new cures. If we don't have the funding to do the research, this will not happen.”

That’s the same basic idea behind the current system of indirect cost rates for universities.

A university has buildings with labs and furniture and electricity and IT systems (and on and on). They don’t need to buy those things all over again each time a new research study is funded. 7/

Let’s try something. We here at @altnih4science.bsky.social want to boost descriptions of NIH-funded science.

If you’re a scientist with a post or thread that describes your work, please tag us or DM us, and we’ll repost.
We’ll use the #NIHFundsGreatScience hashtag so people can read in future. 🧪

Freezing scientific funding isn’t abstract. In medicine, life or death is often dictated by time. Temporary delays can cause great harm.

I was set to enter a clinical trial in February.
It's since been canceled.
You are spot on with "cancer itself will not agree to such a delay."

"...if NCI-supported trials really are delayed or suspended for a meaningful amount of time, that means delayed discoveries, delayed drug approvals, delayed potential treatments for people whose cancer will not itself agree to such a delay."

I talk to multiple people inside NCI and NIH:

Most folks do not understand how far in advance the planning and logistics of NIH grants take.

We prepare for months or years for these submissions for one of 3 cycles per year.

This study section cancellation delays grants by at least 6 months when study sections are cancelled.
