Today I was thinking about small kindnesses, simple inexpensive things that brighten a day, and I thought about how the receptionist at my school saved me from humiliation in front of the Headmaster on account of having left my belt in a vase.

Goddamn. What a sobering and poignant piece of conceptual art. What an amazing artist.

In Northern California, a group of volunteers spend every night from late fall through winter as crossing guards–escorting migrating salamanders across a rural road.
How did the newt cross the road? With the help of the Chileno Valley Newt Brigade!

I'm gonna go to the caps lock for this: THE ONLY EFFECTIVE WAY TO PREVENT THE EXHAUSTION AND BURNOUT THE FASCISTS ARE RELYING ON YOU TO FALL INTO IS TO LIMIT YOUR EXPOSURE TO HORRORS, KEEP YOUR ACTIVISM CONCRETE AND EFFECTIVE, AND DO OTHER THINGS WITH AS MUCH FERVOR AS YOU DO ACTIVISM.

The first *Love Letters: Reasons to Be Alive* essay just landed in thousands of inboxes.

It's about being large in a very small world, and being small in a very large world. It's about a moment that kept me going through an impossibly hard year.

It's about a tiny crab.

Climate change is a huge problem and everyone should do what they can but I strongly believe blaming individuals instead of corporations is a corporate tactic to obscure the key causes, create personal guilt, and discourage people from organizing for real progress.

Dick Van Dyke spent 3 days a week during the pandemic helping out at three different food pantries for people who couldn't get work.

It later came out that he spent about 15% of his income between March 2020 and October 2022 donating to those same food pantries.
Dick Van Dyke, who'll turn 99 in a few days, sings and dances his way through a new video recorded just a couple of months ago, and whoo-boy, did it make me verklempt. But in a good way. I sure do love that man. youtu.be/o4OlL0OpbW8

1. The conventional explanation for food deserts—that these places are too poor or too rural to generate enough spending on groceries, or too Black to overcome racist corporate redlining — fail to grapple with a key fact: food deserts didn’t used to exist. My new piece in The Atlantic.
The Mystery of Food Deserts
They didn’t materialize around the country for no reason. Something happened.

I don’t want common sense politics. I want politics shaped by community representatives and scientists with deep systemic understanding of the problems involved, plus one politician with great communication skills to explain it to us like we’re six.

To reiterate a post from the Other Site, for most of the last four thousand+ years, the vast majority of people living in cities got takeout. Many apartments lacked kitchens due to space and fire risk. Cooking yourself 7 fresh, varied meals a week is a VERY recent expectation.
Someone replied to me bringing up fast food by asking if I knew cooking exists and it’s a joke and totally fine but I want everyone to know that if you’re in a place in life where it’s cheaper to get food that way or if you’ve just worked two shifts, the idea of “cooking” holds no inherent nobility

We got tricked by science fiction into thinking a futuristic city is all about flying cars and crystal towers and hologram billboards but what it really looks like is nice apartment blocks, good mass transit, pedestrian zones with shade trees and safe bike lanes.
