For Advent, I'll be posting some of the old Christmas cards in my collection, starting with two that belonged to my great-grandmother. One of my great-grandmother's jobs was hand-colouring B&W photographs. I assume these two cards are some of her work.

'Fang', the snaggletoothed tuxedo cat, is at home with a couple of loyal, yet untrustworthy friends (or fiends?): a crow and a rat. The full moon shines through the gothic window. This particular full moon, however, is a giant grinning pumpkin! It's all quite eerie, yet in a sinisterly gleeful way, suitable for year-round viewing. Drawn in black India ink with predominantly blue and orange watercolor washes. Here we have a curious, and somewhat trepidatious cat in a dark and unnerving, derelict garden. She has somehow felt 'watched'. As she walks between two huge topiaries, she is indeed being observed! A black and white drawing. Here we have four mysterious, furtive and highly suspicious-looking black cats with glowing eyes, sitting together on a park bench, late at night, under the light from a lamppost. Are they plotting something nefarious - or just mischievous? Or, has the deed already been done? Or do they just look guilty? This is an exercise in atmospheric light and shadow and strong contrasts. A black & white drawing.

Das ist die Voraussetzung für das eigentliche Ziel der Merz-Regierung: Arbeitnehmerrechte abbauen. Kapitalismus in seiner brutalsten Form. Wer Angst hat, hält die Klappe, auch bei untragbaren Zuständen, mieser Bezahlung oder unbezahlten Überstunden. Deshalb geht die Zerstörung des Sozialstaats alle an - Arbeiter*innen, Angestellte, Selbstständige, Arbeitslose, Bürgergeld-Empfänger*innen, Rentner*innen, Student*innen, Auszubildende usw. Wir müssen jetzt alle geeint und gemeinsam gegen diese Zerstörung kämpfen, mobil machen, demonstrieren. The title is "Mise en Scène pour la Nuit". The stage has been set for the night's events. The characters involved have assembled. (Yes, I consider the crescent moon, park bench, topiary hedge, and the lamp post all as players in my 'production'.) What might transpire tonight in this hidden, lonely corner of the old park? Are they waiting for another, as yet unseen participant to join them? You might think it unfair, but I'm leaving it up to your imagination to create the scenario and whatever story may follow. This pictures Fang, a snaggletoothed tuxedo cat at home with a couple of loyal, yet creepy friends (or should I say ‘fiends’?). A claw-toothed raven is perched on Fang’s wingbacked chair whilst a fanged rat is stationed on the carpet. A dead plant resides in a vase to the right. A full moon shines through the gothic window. This particular moon however, is a giant grinning pumpkin! It’s all quite eerie, yet in a sinisterly gleeful way, suitable for year-round viewing. Drawn in dip pen & ink with a symphony of blue & orange watercolour washes.
