Johnny Rocco:
Like idk man, seems like a lot of Americans are bored and prosperous and believe things would Improve if only we had a mafia state that allowed them to defect in more prisoner dilemmas. Not sure what to do with that, but it really seems like it’s how Americans feel their government should operate.

My only thought regarding non-LOTR characters handling the One Ring is that the Road Runner would carry it without issue; whereas the minute Wile E. Coyote picked it up, all nine Nazgûl would descend upon him.

Counter argument. If Chicago style pizza was any good, it wouldn’t need a philosophical argument to defend it.
As a professional philosopher, the only form of relativism I endorse is pizza relativism.

Persons outside the culture that produced the pizza are ill-equipped to judge the culinary status of pizza within the culture that produced it.

As far as I can tell this is a pretty consistent and (to those In The Know) by this point rather familiar finding: whatever it is LLMs are doing, it's not deduction in any good or reliable sense. Worth stressing tho, cos there's a lot of public misunderstanding here.

Burrhus is now up there with like zebulon and thaddeus on my short list of archaic names we should bring back
Kinda jarring to see “B. F. Skinner” so casually unabbreviated in the wild…

Lying is so awesome. Crafting reality is usually the provenance of gods and kings, but with one word, I can be the most interesting person at a party, the highest ranking person at a meeting or the least qualified person currently operating heavy machinery.

Facebook severely restricted the ability of Palestinian news outlets to reach an audience during the Israel-Gaza war, and Instagram increased its moderation of Palestinian user comments after October 2023.
How Facebook restricted news in Palestinian territories
Palestinian news outlets have seen a steep drop in audience engagement since October 2023.

the good feelings in the era of good feelings were just perpetual tipsiness
spent this afternoon reading some early US history (as one does) and was reminded of the important fact that these people were almost constantly drunk as hell

Don't forget the micro-asymmetrics, who are very much the invisible heroes of the Bluesky ecosystem. I may only have 100 followers, but I follow even fewer, tending towards that apotheosis of social media engagement: the poster with a single follower, who follows no-one at all.

Perhaps overly cynical but it really seems like the prevalence of close readings of great literature to understand society as a method in a lot of theory seems less due to it being a plausible method and more due to scholars liking to read great literature
