The best positive case for liberalism, relatedly, is thus: the open society that liberalism creates constantly challenges everyone to be more than what they are, to be more moral, more strong, more compassionate, more intelligent, more skilled.

It liberates the spirit of competition and creativity.

Willing to die so that Exxon can pay out a larger dividend next quarter. You're not Garibaldi, bro
No, liberalism IS the right word. We’re not tossing out the proud history of the set of ideas that has liberated half of humanity because internet communists got drunk on late capitalism memes, or a bunch of compromised centrist slimeballs adopted it as code for bolstering the status quo

a lot of young men's problems are skill issues and it's true that sometimes it helps them to just be bluntly told they need to git gud, but I think there is also a genuine problem in our lack of social environments that encourage them to improve those skills
I saw this Reddit post earlier and it’s so true. The rise of incels and toxic masculinity stems from people who can’t just make friends and instead view every woman as a potential partner. Just be friends and be okay with that, that’s really all it takes.

The last core unifying ideal of the Republican Party at this point is that they have no responsibilities or obligations to other citizens.

The roots of the post-WWII international order was not idealism, but rather that one hundred million people had died in the last six years and that some very ruthless and ambitious men understood that there was no longer any way to gain more from a Great Power conflict than there was to lose.
"Trump is in a tradition of realist presidents, going back to Theodore Roosevelt more than a century ago, who have viewed world politics as a great-power club, rather than an arena for idealism."

Must-read NEW Michael Lind.

here is the thing about the “argument” that democrats should have run roughshod over the law when they had the chance: it is much easier to break the law to destroy a program than break the law to create one.

the thing about the civil rights movement is that they weren't a mass movement, not really. the freedom rides and the freedom summer were a few thousand people. but they understood that despite lacking all formal power, they could create confrontations that advanced their narrative.

it worked.
