I celebrate political wins, yet caution that they won't last UNLESS they can stem the trends happening in climate.
Zack's many graphic posts point towards bigger storms, heat waves, and floods. Consequences will mount, leading to more deaths from crop failures, spread of tropical pests and diseases.

Schumer led Senate Democrats in fighting Trump over healthcare, period.

If you think Senate leaders can control members of their caucus, you don’t know much about the Senate. And before you say “McConnell,” remember why we still have the ACA when Trump and McConnell wanted it gone.

I've been a Bernie supporter for well over a decade. He, AOC and progressives like Mamdani articulate well why and how populist politics are needed and can win in America. Centrist Democrats consistently undercut those opportunities.
@sanders.senate.gov: "We have already had 15 Republicans in the Senate defy Trump and say, 'Release the SNAP funds.' So I think that if we had held firm, it would be the Republicans who would yield. That was not the position of these 8 Democrats."

I'm not happy BUT I respect O'Donnell and heed his views.
He defends Schumer (an unpopular stand) by stating pressure he's seen... leading when needs differ.
He points to how Mike Johnson now faces swearing in the 218th vote, so “the Epstein files come back to life in the House of Representatives."
Lawrence: With Trump's shutdown ending, Dems are closer than ever to forcing Epstein files release

This smells of coddling a felon to prevent testimony that would affect people of wealth and power. Examining who authorized what action would normally embarrass, but in this pardon prone administration - it seems just a holding pattern.

Sean Casten's right. BTW, the fraud is the idea that Republicans are committed to making healthcare affordable.
If they were they'd support expanding Medicare for all. America's insertion of private healthcare middlemen primarily functions to make corporate profits, not a healthier nation.
My wife and I pay for life insurance even though we have never died. I pay for fire insurance even though my house has never burned down. That's not because we want to throw money at insurance companies. It's because THAT'S HOW INSURANCE WORKS.

If the Senate vote passes tonight it will mean 20-30 million Americans lose their healthcare immediately. For Dems to surrender after 41 days is unbelievable. But somewhat expected. Call your Senators and tell them to vote no. This is a 5 alarm fire. #ProudBlue
Sanders: Let’s be clear… If this vote succeeds, over 20 million Americans are going to see at least a doubling in their premiums… if resolution is passed tonight, we are on a path way to throw 15 million Americans off of medicaid and the affordable care act, 15 million.

Democrats swept elections less than a week ago. We made our voice loud and clear. But once again Senate Democrats are tone deaf as to the mood of the country. We want Dems to fight for the American people. Not surrender for a “promise“ of a non binding hearing on ACA credits. Do Not Cave #ProudBlue

8 Senators fail!
Promises from POTUS & MAGA GOP are worthless. Caving only encourages worse behavior ahead. The pressure was on the GOP majority to say yes to healthcare. It was growing as people saw their 2026 ACA premiums, and those without private jets get flights cancelled ahead of Thanksgiving.

Twice the cost yet we rank 15th and 69th among countries with the best healthcare in the world, according to two major studies. Yes … 69th! Maybe one bright spot in this healthcare subsidy-fueled government shutdown is that we take a hard look in the mirror and agree that big changes need to happen.

By keeping the case for herself Justice Jackson was able to directly influence the timing in both the First Circuit and the Supreme Court, at least for now. She tied her colleagues’ hands—by having her administrative stay expire 48 hours after the First Circuit rules, forcing quick action.
Informative!
Read about WHY Ketanji Brown Jackson stayed the SNAP order. Her move is probably the best solution for getting SNAP benefits approved quickly. open.substack.com/pub/stevevla...

History has taught us that this is precisely when Donald Trump is most dangerous — and when Republicans turn to voter suppression, election subversion and worse. With the 2026 midterm elections less than a year away, Trump is already plotting his next moves.

Here’s what we all need to prepare for.

Collectively, Homo Sapiens is not sapient (wise.) Society is a superorganism that acts to continue its life of extraction, consumption, and polluting waste streams without constraints. Authoritarians support the superorganism by promising solutions. They gain political power, but accelerate collapse
In case you missed it, wide-ranging and insightful.

"there's actually a connection between global heating and the rise of fascism ... this like general sense of fear that things aren't going well, which makes a populace susceptible to authoritarianism"

Before the disgusting GOP cut SNAP and are now fighting court orders ordering them to quit their psychosis & feed Americans, they cut USAID which has already *starved 100’s of 1000’s of human beings worldwide to death.*

Barbaric isn’t enough to describe such depravity.

*Well* past “politics.”

IMPORTANT NEWS! Past models did not include these details. Expect improved model predictions of ice melt rates & sea level rise, which affect rate changes to expect in the strength of the AMOC.
A weaker AMOC means less, maybe much less heat distributed from the tropics to Iceland & Northern Europe.
