TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

One of our nation’s crown jewels, the 1.8 million worker-strong Federal civil service, is being gutted in front of our eyes. All of the managers, scientists, engineers, and staff onto whom we offloaded the maintenance and operations of our 21st c. society: fired, disrespected, jerked around… 1/
I still can't get over that we're gonna let them gut NOAA and then dance around covered in its bloody entrails screaming "I bet you are owned now, lib!" No one wants to lose weather forecasts and there literally isn't even a private option available. This would be like shutting off GPS for funsies
