Something I wish more people understood: part of the point of shock-and-awe grant terminations at NIH and NSF has been to make scientists and university administrators afraid to speak out against the administration. And it's working. But, some of us were never going to get a grant from them anyway.

honestly I am in a state of grief over what NIH has become

that grief is borne of 30+ years of NIH support via the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) and then R01 grants

likewise I've served on NIH study sections as an ad hoc reviewer, regular member, and chair

none of this is normal

NIH will no longer list NIH grant opportunities through the NIH Guide.

Sure, grants.gov was duplicative. But grants.gov is shitty. And NIH's Guide was less shitty.

Not a huge deal. But just one more example of exec branch consolidation and NIH enshittification

Russell Vought has unilaterally decided today that he simply won’t allow anyone outside of NIH to receive research funding.

$15 billion in NIH funding is now locked down. If not reversed, it will also take down many Universities in the United States.

Forget new cancer treatments or vaccines.

With NIHs new 6-grant/PI cap (incl resub) we’re locked out for a year. We submitted duplicates bc FOAs were being pulled mid-sub & were told to submit to the parent. I get that POs are overwhelmed, but we’re all trying to stay afloat. MultiPI collabs will suffer. Welp, guess I’ll get my wkends back.

This week, I’m hosting The Daily Show Tuesday through Thursday.

It’s my first time hosting anything on TV. Ever.

I’ve spent years writing behind the scenes, learning from truly great and talented people. Now, for three nights, I get to sit at the desk and do it myself.

June was a whirlwind for our post-bacc program.

The grant that funds us was terminated 😣

But we had an amazing symposium & celebrated our scholars going to grad school🎉 🎓

Last week, I reported that while the Challenged Directives are now void, the NIH is disregarding the order and demanding its staff still screen grants for compliance with the new (very illegal!) agency priorities.

Stay tuned for p2 of this lawsuit soon, on unreasonable delays of NIH funds

-fin-
At a recent hearing, Sen. Hassan asked Bhattacharya whether he'd follow the president's directives even if it meant breaking the law.

Bhattacharya said, “I don't believe the president will ever ask me to break the law."

Here, NIH is defying a court order — which ruled the agency broke the law
SCOOP: NIH appears to be disregarding last week's court order to stop screening grants using a process a judge ruled illegal.

This has many NIH staffers confused and worried about the legality of their actions.

Update! This was marked “Pending IRG review” in eRA Commons until today. It now says “withdrawn” (in red letters), which is a blatant lie. I did not withdraw the proposal. Also it’s a pretty terrible feeling to see all that work go to waste. I hate it here.
So even though the notice for the grant I applied for in the fall is gone (“page not found”), I received notification it was assigned to study section a few days ago. Do we think this means anything, @jeremymberg.bsky.social? Or is it a red herring?

Wow, 7% depressing. In other news, please check your compiled grants in ERA Commons. 129 pages of our P50 missing going between the final preview of submitted Grant in ASSIST to the compiled grant in Commons. No errors. Put in ticket. Fixed. Still 2 pages missing. The NIH is not alright. 🙁

It should surprise no one that most contemporary scientists are woke. As far as I can tell, most of us are into improving the human condition, minimizing hardship across the board, empowering the underprivileged, and ensuring the prosperity of our society for the future.
