I do wonder what it costs financially to have an army occupying Los Angeles and why I keep being told the government doesn't have enough money to pay for public schools to buy supplies for their teachers

You ever just find yourself thinking about Kit Marlowe?

The only way I can describe being an American in my lifetime is that the country has been shaken loose from its foundations, and we’re slowly sinking into a pit. And while I’m trying to gently tiptoe around, other people are jumping as hard as they can to make us fall in faster.

do people not realize that the NIH cuts are meant to force universities to make cuts to programs that do not get NIH grants? the consultants will descend, and they will recommend what they always recommend: kill the humanities.

I don’t have anything smart to say about this except it’s very scary to watch federal funding for science get switched off AND it’s very weird institutionally given how for years the line to humanities “why can’t you pay for yourselves like the grant-funded disciplines”

The world feels like it’s ending and I’m just a sad goth girl who has an unhealthy obsession with Mary Shelley… time to read the Last Man and get even more depressed about apocalyptic plagues and climate change

Both USAID and the Dept of Education together account for less than 2% of the federal budget. Starting to think this has nothing to do with saving money. If it was you'd look at the corruption and waste in the Defense Dept budget but it’s probably too much to expect someone to defund themselves.

Seeing many academics question the value of teaching U.S. constitutional law at a time like this

My view: a pragmatic, clear-eyed understanding of constitutional governance is needed now more than ever

To be honest, I'm surprised every scientific agency and university and so on is getting on its knees for this administration rather than actually resisting fascism in some meaningful way

A reminder that fiction — books, film, games, what have you — is always political. The willful absence of “politics” in any work is itself a political choice and a political act. Who gets to tell (and sell) stories is political. It might be an undercurrent — covert, not overt. But it’s there.

Thank you for reading, I’m so proud of you! 💛

We are in a literacy crisis, we have to do everything possible to encourage reading and love of books 📚

Reading is not easy, it is a challenge we are worthy & capable of conquering. When we find that one story… oh! The wonder, the magic, the joy ✨

If making America great again requires you to pay more for everything, lose your retirement savings, work more for less pay, be unable to afford health insurance, become an indentured servant to the oligarchs, maybe you were better off with the no so great version.

That idiot became president when I was eleven years old.

He’s been dismantling my rights for half my life. For half my life, I was told I could be whatever I wanted. Then the people in charge looked me in the eyes and said it was all a lie.

I hate everyone who let this happen to us.

I don't know how to break it to the people who are apparently just learning it from Eggers' NOSFERATU for the first time, but one of the massive engines thrumming beneath the surface of pretty much all gothic horror is "women being extremely horny."

When elitist pundits claim "No one saw it coming", all that shows is who they consider to be no one.

Never let them tell you who you are or what you're worth.

I’ve been coming across a lot of people saying that the arts have no purpose.

Art has saved my life a thousand times over. The book I wrote saved my life. It gave my existence meaning when nothing else mattered.

Art is not impractical.
Art isn’t useless.
Art is life. It is rebellion. It is hope.
