As the old carol goes, it really has been “snow on snow”. An overnight sprinkling has frozen into big, crunchy crystals on top of what was already there, and now everything is catching the light. Everything is shimmering, as if an over enthusiastic card crafter has gone wild with a glitter spray.

In English we know it as “Carol of the Bells,” but the melody arises from a Ukrainian folk tradition of songs welcoming the new year and summoning the forces of nature to meet human labor and bring prosperity.
Do listen.

Another beautiful Shchedryk performance amidst ruins.

It was set in what used to be a DTEK thermal power plant — now destroyed by russia.

The contrast between russia’s destructive nature and the Ukrainian will to create beauty even in the darkest times is palpable.

The whole Third Term Project isn’t actually about Trump. The people behind it know he will likely be dead or enfeebled by 2029. It is about them, the vastly unpopular group around Trump, wanting to grift us forever without elections.

Here in Seattle, furloughed NOAA employees were out in the pouring rain cleaning up beaches yesterday, part of a national week of service organized by federal workers who can't do their jobs due to the shutdown.

The administration has already eliminated hundreds of jobs at NOAA, including in the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center.
