binned windows 10 on my laptop and installed Linux Mint. Seems great so far tbh!

this video gives me the same problem I have with the Transformers films. Theres so much visual noise I cannot read what its actually meant to be. Looks nice in a still, but moving its just a mess. Games pushing 'maximum detail everywhere' lose overall readability.

watching someone type code on youtube at CRAZY FAST HACKZOR speeds but having to go back and recorrect *literally everything* they type because theres so many mistakes is kinda infuriating. 🤦‍♂️

Played Driver (ps1) yesterday to see if I still got filtered by the unskippable first training/tutorial mission.

the answer is yes. 🫠

validated the 'box of useless cables' in the loft by pulling out a SCART switcher that I never expected to see again so I can hook up a Mister with vga->scart (absolutely phenomenal on a crt) & dragged the venerable PS2 out for some Ibara. (also looks incredible with an RGB scart cable!) #shmup

The last 5 months have been my own personal version of 'Calvin waiting for his Propellor Beanie'*, but the FPGA board I ordered in Novemeber has finally arrived!
(*hopefully without the accidental self destruction, and inevitable disappointment)

excited, been waiting for this since preordering in november :D
We are now doing QA on batch 3 Mister Pi motherboards. I have enough to build an FPGA cluster.

We need a delayed shipment of NFC cards before we can start shipping. If they arrive by Friday, Turbo/Mega Pack orders will ship this weekend.

crazy, Now 360 games can be decompied/recompiled as native applications, allowing much better mods and tweaks than using emulator hacks.
Fans stepping up when publishers dont bother to do it. 👏

ABYSS X ZERO work-in-progress:

In between dungeons, you'll explore large open fields, with roaming giant creatures, like this one!

I'm now working on the procedural animation system that allows it to walk on any type of terrain elevation, react to the player, etc

its really is beautiful. I dont particuarly miss having a physical 'big box' game collection, but I would definately make an exception for stuff like this.

Two print on demand books, but which is better? There's only one way to find out... FFFIIIGGGHHT!

Coincidentally, while looking at 8 bit stuff I saw a new game begin developed by @suzukiplan.bsky.social for something called VGS-Zero which looks like a virtual/fantasy z80 8 bit console with extra 'hardware' support that can run on a pi zero 2. It looks very intriguing!

really want to do some 8 bit Assembler but cant decide between:
c64, spec, gameboy colour, atari 8 bit (800xl) or Master system.
its pretty 50/50 between z80 and 6502 right now, and c64/spec are the obvious choice but I feel like I want to do something with a system I never had. Atari 800 looks fun.

currently reading some 6502 Assembly books and was thinking of trying some C64 or Atari stuff, this looks like it would be incredibly useful!
Today I learned this emulator was a thing and holy shit this is really fucking awesome!

Tried the Sonic Galactic Fangame - very impressive, very well done. I am consistently impressed with the quality of the fan games.
but man, I just have no fun at all playing it at all, something about Sonic mechanics and level design leaves me cold every time. I just dont get it, its a me thing🤷‍♂️

Flipping through a 1986 C+VG mag and these Bob Wakelin painted ads for Imagine games hit hard.

Been playing Disney Lorcana TCG tonight with the kids and its pretty good. Fixes a few issues with early mana screw, and the pacifist 'quest' alterative to combat is pretty powerful (maybe too much, I got smashed by both kids who just quested while I desperately tried to attack!). Impressed so far.

feeling a terrible urge to attempt some 68000 ASM (either Amiga or ST) using magazine features and applications from coverdisks of the time. 🤔 I do remember Bullfrog (and maybe Argonaut) did some features.
I wonder if its just being overly nostalgic and making life more difficult than necessary!😅

playing some Amiga games with the megadrive 3 button controller is quite transformative.
[Fire/Up/Space] means games like Turrican use all 3 (and you get a button instead of 'Up to jump' which was always awful. Makes me wish there was more of an effort to support extra buttons at the time really.

More Neo Geo Pocket ASM homebrew from 2001 - a little platformer, a multi screen Manic Miner / Monty Mole clone with tiny 8x8 sprites. Collect the rings in all the rooms to win and the level layout is quite evil in places. This one was a bit more of a swine to rebuild but got there eventually.

oh my steam recap is absolutely dismal. 90% of my gaming this year has been:
- Pi connected to a CRT (spec, c64, Amiga, 8/16 bit consoles)
- Xbox360 (+Aurora) Japanese shmups + arcade stick.
- Clone Hero (rock band clone, + drum kit!)

success, found a modern assember that works so I dont have to faff with Virtualising old windows! Heres my simple sprite test recompiled and working 23 years later 😁
Now.... vertical shmup time???! 🤔😅
