Maybe with all the attention paid to the COP, Norwegians will learn that another language has a word equivalent to "dugnad"!
I won’t be at COP this year, but I can buy into #mutirão (basically a community effort/“barn raising”) and #virada (never, ever quitting). vas-y 🇧🇷!https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/nov/08/brazil-unorthodox-cop30-approach-no-agenda
Less arguing, more action: will Brazil’s unorthodox approach to Cop30 work?

Perhaps the most striking thing about Bill Gates' lil memo "three tough truths about climate" is quite how many responses there have been. A wee thread to gather some together (add others that I've missed, please)

Aussie government pushes a new scheme to give free electricity for three hours a day in parts of the country.
Who gets free power — and who misses out — under the new energy offer
The federal government says its new Solar Sharer scheme will also benefit Australians who aren't able to access it, but some experts are hesitant to agree.

Sales of non-diesel heavy trucks in the Chinese domestic market reached 57% of the total in September. LNG truck sales are still doing well, but the growth is largely in battery trucks.

Interesting. Downtime at Kollsnes, Troll, and Sleipner because of "Failure – external power supply". Troll and Sleipner are platforms connected to mainland electricity, Troll connected via Kollsnes, and Sleipner via Haugsneset (near Kårstø).

Interesting climate/energy policy developments in China.
The Central Committee of the Communist Party lays out the key directions and priorities for China for the next five years. It reaffirms the importance of clean energy for China's energy, economic and industrial policy, but raises concerns about commitment to 2030 climate targets.

Four-minute video worth your time.
Over 2021-24, the EU sent €930 billion more out of the country to import fossil fuels instead of investing domestically. EVs and heat pumps are obvious ways to reduce this waste, but there are more.

Nudging makes it sound so easy. Apparently it's not.
"People living in countries with opt-out systems perceive organ supply as sufficient, and are consequently less willing to become living donors."
Net effect: fewer organs available, not more.
Opt-out organ donation policies may reduce organ supply
Every day, 17 Americans die while waiting for an organ transplant. Opt-out organ donation policies, which enroll everyone into post-mortem donation programs by default unless people choose to opt out,...

In which they don't discuss why they called it "carbon emissions" in the title when the report they're covering is actually about the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.
Have to assume they think these are the same, but they're not. Such is our collective misuse of the word "emissions".

"try installing solar panels on your roof in the U.S. Americans pay a median price of $28,000 for a 7-kilowatt system. The typical Australian, meanwhile, spends just $4,000, and the German — after filling out a mere two-page application — pays $10,000 per project."
