Jeg tror ikke jeg brukte en osthøvel før jeg kom til Norge!

Maybe with all the attention paid to the COP, Norwegians will learn that another language has a word equivalent to "dugnad"!
I won’t be at COP this year, but I can buy into #mutirão (basically a community effort/“barn raising”) and #virada (never, ever quitting). vas-y 🇧🇷!https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/nov/08/brazil-unorthodox-cop30-approach-no-agenda
Less arguing, more action: will Brazil’s unorthodox approach to Cop30 work?

Huh. That sounds very similar to the Norwegian word "dugnad", which they always say is an idea only found in Norwegian... I tell them we had "working bees" when I grew up.

And now India updated, with a surge in sales in October to a record high on the back of some substantial reductions in value-added taxes (GST) in late September. October is also the high season for festivals, which leads to more splurging.

Things are indeed going in the wrong direction. Today's news:
Norwegian govt wants to revise the ethical guidelines for the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund. Why? The ethical council was about to look into the role of big tech in wars and conflict, which could have lead to the exclusion of the likes of Alphabet and Microsoft

One for @jaapburger.eu's collection, if he wasn't already aware!
And the article uses a peculiarly Aussie word in the first sentence "spruiking", which I believe just means promoting/pushing.

Aussie government pushes a new scheme to give free electricity for three hours a day in parts of the country.
Who gets free power — and who misses out — under the new energy offer
The federal government says its new Solar Sharer scheme will also benefit Australians who aren't able to access it, but some experts are hesitant to agree.

Possibly per capita and including LULUCF.

Yes, just over 28%.

ChatGPT:
Sales of non-diesel heavy trucks in the Chinese domestic market reached 57% of the total in September. LNG truck sales are still doing well, but the growth is largely in battery trucks.

Just a reminder that it's not "Norway" that awards the prize, it's a committee, and there's no question this committee has made some very, very odd decisions over the years.

And Norway's fund has specific exclusion rules for fossil fuels. That doesn't mean there is no investment in fossil fuels, but there is less of it in the investment mix than your average indexed fund, for example. Yes, it's a double standard. But better than no standard.

Of course Norway has an obligation to invest ethically. But that applies regardless of where the money comes from, not because of it. It applies especially to Norway and other countries that have made wealth from activities that are harmful, but not only to them.

and does its best to identify companies that breach those rules. It is labelled by others as the standard, but that doesn't mean it always gets it right, which is a high bar.
Of course failures should be called out, but let's put them in context. Greetings from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and others.

Selectively calling out countries / entities that are making some effort and are transparent enough to identify issues is what frustrates me, and the endless context of "the country claims to be a good actor but...".
Norway specifically excludes investment in weapons manufacturing in specific cases

I believe there's still some possibility that international shipping might have a bit of hydrogen?

Perhaps it's the future of museum displays...

Norway's fleet of hydrogen fuel-cell passenger cars has halved in size since its peak less than three years ago. The all-time peak was 0.0084% of the fleet.

Tesla has been earning money on this for years, but the federal system ceased at the end of Septmber.

Correction: the article doesn't "suggest" this, it states it.

Moreover, the article suggests without evidence that the investments are strategic. They are not. The fund is meant to be entirely independent of politics. Which is precisely why it is difficult to address these few investments quickly.

There is no "contradiction" in being a country that awards the peace prize and at the same time as being a country that doesn't do everything right, because no country does everything right. Yes, call out the investments, but context of peace prize as if such a country should be perfect?

Most sovereign wealth funds have no ethical guidelines at all. Obviously the fund should do better, but it is set up to prevent changes with the politics of the day. That's a difficult balance, clearly. Norway's efforts to invest ethically are imperfect, of course they are. All efforts are imperfect
