If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

If Kimmel had done this riff with Charlie Kirk, he'd still be off the air.
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

Starting his speech with a Debs quote? He's actually trying to make a Fox anchor's head explode now.

1. You lie and actively make the world a worse place with every word you utter, and the six-figure substack will be gravy on your staff position at a legacy outlet

2. You try to do good journalism and spend your life wondering what it's like to have health insurance

hmm, maybe needs a 3rd choice

It's always amusing to me that he did so badly in Atlantic City. His entire m.o. is the same as a casino owner: optimize all space for maximum revenue. The only difference now is he has nothing to sell, but he sees open space as "how can we use this?" rather than "this could be an oasis."

My first (and, to date, only) staff writer job was covering high school sports in 2001-03 -- long before Zoom, etc. -- in the DC suburbs. It was a remote job. My office was wherever my iBook clamshell sat. This makes no damn sense whatsoever.
2. Rolling Stone is owned by a large media conglomerate, which is ending remote work across its brands.

My home is Portland, Oregon, ~1,000 miles from the nearest office, so this marks the end of the line for me at RS.

RIP D'Angelo, the greatest singer since Marvin departed. Who took the grit & attitude of hip-hop & alchemized it into angelic voodoo. He condensed the human condition - sex, suffering, addiction, love, oppression - into pure transcendence. A comet emitting blinding light & soul.

repost this if an editor has ever saved you from yourself
An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

A wonderful eulogy about a wonderful writer. The despair is heavy right now.
Put together some thoughts here.

In an earlier time he would have been the kind of writer being paid $5 a word by magazines to go write about whatever he pleased. And no one would be pissed off or jealous about it either.
