In an unexpected twist, it looks like my stepdad did have some sort of conscience deep down, but his sister really doesn't. She got him to change his will in the last 6 months of his life, when he was desperately unwell, to cut me out entirely and benefit her own children.

Recognizing how bad things actually are doesn't make you a "doomer." In fact, it instills a sense of urgency and encourages you not to take anything for granted. The real nihilists are those that believe the status quo is immutable, because their refusal to change is what will bring about disaster.
