RIP Pope Francis. Obviously, a lot of problems with the Church still remain, but he did feel like one of the few global leaders left still trying to contribute some good to the world rather than ransack it.

in the american system, the president may represent a national electorate but this does not imbue him with anything other than rhetorical power. he must still negotiate with congress, which represents particular constituencies, and heed the courts, who determine what the law is.
