I think the thing that makes me most uncomfortable about American car culture is the fear it instills, above all in other drivers. “Defensive driving” = a constant worry about being a victim to a slight mistake made by a distracted driver. And the way people justify speeding, saying that it’s….

They used to. The Republican St stairs used to connect Cascade and Capitol Hill. Then I-5 came a long and dropped a concrete curtain through the city. Today only the top 1/3 remain

Can you believe that most cities in the US and Canada, with only a few exceptions, allow cars to turn right despite having a red light?

If all of these people had driven individual cars, it would have filled an entire parking lot and then some. Public transport is a aving carbon, reducing traffic, and getting people closer to the game. People are showing up, but Seattle needs to do its part now to improve the rider experience.
Lots of people riding the 1 Line tonight, with 80,000 sports fans in town. The meter queue was organized but people were still cutting the line.

So far my #weekwithoutdriving has been successful! I’m commuting by walking and taking the Link as I usually do when the days get shorter, but I’ve been inspired to try out the Seattle bike locker system to see if I can incorporate my bike!

A young rescued river otter is swimming free again!
Found orphaned along a roadside, she was brought to the Zoo for care before continuing her recovery at Center Valley Animal Rescue with other two male rescued otters. Last week, all three were released back into the wild!

Sounders and Mariners game today. Met someone on the platform who couldn’t find parking near the stadium and drove home to take the light rail in. Train frequency with these expected high volumes? Every 16 minutes. This is why people don’t have any faith in Sound Transit. #Seattle

The Methow Valley is such a special place. The off road cycling here is world class, with an extensive network of well maintained trails. An amazing getaway, less than a 5h drive from Seattle. methowtrails.org/methow-trail...
Methow Trails summer system
We connect people, nature and communities through a world-class trail system in the Methow Valley. Nestled in a high pocket of the North Cascades in north-central Washington, the Methow Trails system ...

There’s a certain economic advantage to shopping at Costco, but the long-term cost is losing our local groceries and shops. Not to mention that the extra time, stress, and the cost of impulse buys. At the end of the day, if we want 15 minute cities, we have to support businesses near us. #Seattle

Unspoken ally in the quest for better bike infrastructure in Seattle: Lime. The rollout of the Lime Gliders has been incredibly quick, and for the most part they’re keeping them running well. The business is rapidly expanding, because riding them is faster and easier than driving. #SEABikes

Tourists who fly or take a cruise to Seattle do not have cars. And tourism here is an $8.8b market… with a good but still flawed public transit system. Comparatively, an extra $30b for more car-free urban exploration, and to have events like the World Cup, seems like a good investment. #Seattle

Man, bike shops are such a neighborhood asset, always seem to be involved in community building events. But auto shops? It seems like there are 10x more of them in Seattle, and while I can’t deny the importance of what they do, I don’t see why they need to be smack dab in a residential area.

Driving math: My commute time is 25 mins, but the traffic and parking are stressful.

Transit math: In my 40 minute commute, I get 20 minutes of walking, pick up coffee en route (saving a 5 minute trip), and spend 20 minutes reading a book. I arrive relaxed, and negative 5 mins in my time bank.

Cristian Roldan does it all. In this game alone: pressed the GK, covered CBs, short and long passes in build up, final passes, overlaps, underlaps, counterpressing, creating chances from regains, defending the box and important clearances, starting transitions. He's everywhere.

#USMNT is so much better with Roldan. Crazy it took them so long to realize that.

Walked home from the light rail the opposite sidewalk today. Seeing things from a slightly different perspective - it felt like I was taking a completely different route. In this world there is just something so valuable about having feet on the ground and really seeing things up close.

The Seattle Sounders were wounded and weakened, overlooked and undermanned, but they beat Lionel Messi and Inter Miami to win the 2025 Leagues Cup title.
