Generative AI is profoundly indefensible from environmental AND ethical standpoints. You can’t claim you want a more just world and to stop killing our climate and then casually use AI to compose an email that would take you maybe 5 minutes. I will die on this hill.
Don't use AI. Just stop. NO, not even for "good" reasons. If you don't give af about the fact it's built on stolen work (hey, mine are among the millions of works ripped off, btw), care about the devastating environmental impacts, the financial impacts. It's all bad.

the elite oligarchy in america, through elon musk, are attempting to create a parallel establishment to usher in the destruction of the US government and the ascendency of a new technocracy
Cool, I wonder what this means

A Trump-Musk memo telling US government employees to hide what’s happening from the public is a sign that:

1) Public legitimacy is a constraint for them, they know it, and will at times alter their behavior accordingly

2) Reporters should focus on it, revealing more of what they’re trying to hide
Awful: Internal USAID memo instructs employees to refrain from talking to the media about cuts in assistance to the most vulnerable or they may get fired, WaPo reports.

Trumpworld knows this is a big political problem for them. Keep the focus on it.

Trump-Musk Scandal at USAID Takes Unnerving Turn With Vile Leaked Memo
Can Trump and his top advisers really just act with total impunity? Or is there, just maybe, a price to be paid for starving poor people and un-indicting a corrupt mayor?

You know what they call a person who reluctantly does something a Nazi tells them to do even though in their heart they know it’s wrong? A Nazi.
I hate that we are losing Nuremberg and the utter rejection of “just following orders” as a defense from living memory. I really thought that would be something you didn’t have to be there to appreciate.

what if the democrats just got to capitol hill early and locked the republicans out of the building so they couldn't vote on stuff?
It's beyond frustrating to watch Democrats in power complain they can't do anything because they're in the minority like we all didn't just watch Mitch McConnell continue to find ways to derail Dem efforts on key bills when Republicans were in the minority.

Make no mistake about this. Despite the bemused deference with which the media will cover this story, the idea of the US depopulating Gaza and then redeveloping it is an enormous crime against humanity.

I don't know why Wired is doing the best reporting on Musk's bullshit (or why the big papers appear to be doing almost none), but we should reward good work where it happens. Subscribe to Wired!

Quick reminder that if you see a headline from a source you’ve never heard of that isn’t being reported by anyone else, you really should do some due diligence before spreading it around as fact. There’s enough misinformation floating around already; no need to add more.

No one is USING AI. They are TRAINING AI. No LLM is ready to be fully deployed. It's all early beta testing they are trying to convince you is actually a product. It is nowhere near its target goals for its intended uses. People aren't paying to use it; they're subsidizing its training. It's a scam.

THE SUBSTANCE nomination is a game changer. I’m long on record as someone saying the Academy doesn’t need to recognize horror, but every company who makes horror is asking for their THE SUBSTANCE, their short hand for “meaningful but unflinching horror film” and things are gonna get real interesting

I’m so upset at the news. David Lynch’s work is what got me into film studies. His work taught me to love film deeply and totally. What a loss.

THREAD: In 2023, I received an envelope with no return address. Inside was a flash drive containing tens of 1000s of secret files.

It came from a vigilante with a tumultuous past, who'd conducted a years-long undercover operation. He didn’t tell the FBI or his family. He only told me.

Watched Nosferatu. Definitely a really intense Gothic horror. Very fun, and my first Eggers film! I liked it quite a lot. Lily Rose-Depp and Willem Dafoe had my favorite performances in the film

TL;DR — buy discs, they are your last, and only, hope at continued access to the films you love *and* proper presentation

DVD is dead. Long live DVD.
Tech’s takeover of show business has turned everything into streaming. The only recourse is to focus on the physical.
