Interesting ("interesting") too of course, to see media constructions swing this easily and uncritically away from characterisations of "the left behind" - a shifting of political blame for the effects of austerity - and back to the type of rhetoric used to justify austerity in the first place.

Again: 'immigration' is not a real political topic.

'Immigration' is a container, for all of the problems of late stage neoliberalism - underfunded public services, degraded housing, low pay, social disintegration etc - all packaged together, and blamed on the very least powerful people in society.

Talking here about what happened to the reporter who revealed the incredible scale of tax evasion and avoidance by the super rich in the Panama Papers. I’d guess she was murdered by car bomb because that’s what would happen in a conspiracy thriller film, and a lot of dumb people have no imagination.

Fifteen years of ideological choices to strangle & gut the public realm - NHS to schools to social services to local museums - is what underlies the anger "tearing our country apart"; immigration is simply the scapegoat that the far right are pushing people toward.
