Since 1990, economic growth has lifted 800 million people out of extreme poverty in China. But it's not just China: "In the world outside of China, 29% lived in extreme poverty in 1990 — by 2022, this share was down to 11%."

Very interesting findings on the recent #blackout in #Spain and #Portugal, which make it clear: the narrative that renewables are to blame is not only overly simplified, but may even distorts the facts!

#IberianBlackout #BlackoutIberia
The official report on the blackout in Spain and Portugal was just released. I'll give a quick summary of findings and provide some additional info.

TL;DR
conventional power plants didn't control the voltage as planned
over-voltage caused renewables to turn off as required

Two things come to mind when you see this chart.

1. You can see how quickly a technology can spread when it's the cheaper and better choice. Nothing to half the deployed market in just over a decade.

2. You mean to say only half all lighting is LED. What are those in the other half thinking?

Lots of talk about how social democracy is in decline, but the collapse of mainstream centre-right parties is just as big a story, and plausibly the main source of the rise of the far right.
Party family vote shares in Europe after Portugal's election:

Right-wing 23.9% (+0.1)
Conservative 23.6% (+0.1)
Social democrat 21.7% (-0.1)
Liberal 11.3% (=)
Socialist 7.6% (-0.1)
Green 4.7% (=)

Are municipalities the bulwark of European democracy? This opinion piece by @economist.com argues that:

„Town halls are obvious places to find capable managers. Demagogues rise by making promises; mayors stay in power by keeping them“.

Interesting read.

Excellent points made by Cas Mudde in this piece for the Guardian (which very kindly references a dear but rather obscure chapter I once wrote back when the elves were young)
The real story isn’t young men supposedly voting far right. It’s what young women are up to
There is an opportunity staring centre-left parties in the face – if they reject the male gaze distorting our politics, says political scientist Cas Mudde
