The richest man on earth owns X.

The second richest man on earth is about to be a major owner of TikTok.

The third richest man owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The fourth richest man owns The Washington Post.

See the problem here?

Ive been feeling so disheartened but opening Bluesky (after a long time) made me feel not so alone.

Question is, what can we do? I want to do my bit
Becoming increasingly clear we’re gonna have to build a parallel infrastructure for all the media we really love. The reason all of this is happening under the color of law is hyperconsolidation, dissent being traded straight up for merger approval, or fear of harassment.

Fox News just said the U.S. doesn't have anything like China's Belt and Road Initiative, which is hilarious. We did. It was called USAID.

The Internet Archive has to date downloaded 500 terabytes of US government websites, which it crawls at the end of every presidential term. The whole archive is fully searchable. This effort's housed by a donation-funded nonprofit, not a branch of the US government. blog.archive.org/2024/05/08/e...

My dad sends me the most adorable investment advice. He should have a column. It always ends with shit like “I know it’s out of style but sleep is the key to health. Assets are there to help you sleep better, not to give you one more thing to worry about.”

The deep goal of bluesky is to decentralize the social internet so that every individual controls their experience of it rather than having it be controlled by 5 random billionaires. Everyone thinks they signed up for a demuskified twitter...we actually signed an exciting and bizarre experiment.

We could go on about how we welcome publishers, we don't demote links, we encourage independent developers to build apps and extensions on top of Bluesky's network.... but instead, we'll show you.

All thanks to the incredible community here! 🦋

idk where this idea that bluesky doesn’t have an algo comes from. if you’re using a new account you likely have the discover feed.. that’s using an algo. 😅

the following feed as far as i know is simply in time order but putting it in time order is… an algorithm. a dead simple one but still one.

I find myself getting overwhelmed lately and until today I just hadn't taken a moment or the space to acknowledge how fucking hard this year has been for me. Physically, emotionally, mentally, financially and even in terms of all my friendships. My foundations have never been tested like this.
