A lot of people don’t want to know about the thing; they’re just mad no one is pushing the magic button that will make the thing go away.
probably my single least favorite thing about posting here; you can say, explicitly, “I am not endorsing this, I think it’s bad, I’m just explaining how it works” and you will get attacked for endorsing it anyway
this site seems to genuinely have an issue with viewing explanation as a form of endorsement

Spanberger understood that protecting trans rights slots perfectly into a wildly popular "Fuck the GOP" platform.
Abigail Spanberger was told to throw trans youth under the bus during her campaign. She refused to do so.

She won the election by 15 percent. A dominant victory. A landslide.

She was just sworn-in as the 75th Governor of Virginia, the first woman to lead the state.

This is true and these people need to get into a mediocre sports team as an outlet like a normal person
I think there's a legitimate social identity of despair in social media where you basically need to constantly perform (already existing but in a lesser form) despair in order to reaffirm yourself as part of the group
half the userbase of this website is addicted to the dopamine hit that comes with "all is loss" bad news. they want to spiral out and resent you when you tell them something tethered to reality.

It’s quite likely that being called a “fucking bitch” is one of the last things a dying Renee Good ever heard.

I demand leaders who are as filled with pure, diamond-hard rage over this as I am.

I believe this is absolutely not asking for too much.
Not to be too morbid, but today's reporting is that she was actually still alive for several minutes. He said that to her while she was dying.

NEW — ICE violence has spread well beyond Minneapolis, with agents landing in small cities like St. Cloud. I spoke with Alice Valentine, a local queer trans woman, who protested ICE on Monday and was pepper sprayed, beaten and jailed as a result, along with her girlfriend.

This is Alice's story:

"this is not who we are" is 90% of the time a normative statement of aspiration, it's not an empirical claim of "these events have never taken place in this country before". one of the most obnoxious genres of "actually..." is reacting like it's the latter when it's clearly the former.

I will give him this: He looks like the president in a movie where the president reads a satanic book out loud at the state of the union and unleashes demons upon the earth and only Bruce Campbell can save the day.

If all you're willing to do is say "We're cooked" on a social media site, maybe it is all over.

If you're willing to struggle alongside your friends and neighbors for democracy, then we've got a chance.

The follow-up to this post is delightful...AND THAT'S BEFORE YOU REALIZE HIS HUSBAND IS TONY KUSHNER!
My husband was on the 2 train and a guy started braying about how Renee Good deserved to die and her "lesbian lover" did too. My husband got pissed and said, "You're absolutely disgusting." "Fuck you!" the guy said. "Fuck YOU!" my husband said. The guy left.

See? We just need to talk to each other.

this is all to say that should democrats win the house and senate this november, they should hold similarly dramatic — which is to say televised and highly publicized — hearings on the conduct of ICE and CBP, with testimony from victims. we want as much of *this* as possible in the record. (3/?)
ICE detained Arlit Maria Martinez on her way to work. 2 days later, her 15 yo son died of cancer. They wouldn't let her out to say goodbye. The family had planned to move back to Mexico prior to the cancer diagnosis but stayed for his treatment. Now, Mr Martinez has lost his wife to ICE & his son.
Teen dies of cancer days after mother arrested by ICE: ‘She’s never gonna see him’
The mother's family pleaded with federal officers for her release from custody to say her final goodbyes to her son, but their requests went unanswered.

"Jacobin" has a huge article on Jewish politics in which they claim the fact that Mamdani's career was not destroyed by allegations of antisemitism, as Jeremy Corbyn's was, is evidence politics are changing.

They do not even consider the possibility Corbyn is an antisemite and Mamdani is not.

look I am generally cautious about applying the language of martyrdom to contemporary events before all the facts are known, but everything that has come out in the last few days makes me feel only more comfortable using that language for what happened to Renee Good

To be clear this is a heartbreaking and beautiful statement from a wife in mourning, that's most important.

But also the fact that I've seen a dozen articles with comments from a grandpa across the country and about Renee's deceased husband and this is the only one about her wife I've seen is vile.

I feel like it was probably a mistake to posit misogyny as the silly, self-indulgent, optional, not-really-a-problem-any-more form of oppression

they didn’t leak it to make the shooter look innocent, but to make the victim look guilty. not guilty of a crime. guilty of having a visibly queer wife. guilty of liberalism. guilty of opposing the regime. they don’t seek to exonerate themselves, only to demonstrate who deserves to die.
In the video that the shooter took, which I believe was leaked to be exculpatory, he appears to yell “fucking bitch” after he shoots Renee Good.
