My pet theory is a lot of those folk's self-perception is that of being left-of-center. And being confronted with the idea that they may have some reactionary opinions leads them to lash out and contend that it's everyone else who's wrong (A "I didn't leave my party, my party left me" kind of thing)
Over the years I’ve noticed that media people who complain about “echo chambers” tend to react very badly to any kind of progressive criticism and retreat further right
