In Australia, when a tree is illegally cut down, the local government area or council will put up a giant billboard as an eyesore in its place that says “A tree has been vandalized”. That ensures that no one can benefit from removing a tree to improve their view! Sign stays until vegetation regrows.

From a space for cars to a place for people — one of my favourite past client cities, Groningen Netherlands. Another powerful before-&-after transformation 1960s vs 2021.

In recent years one of the city’s biggest challenges has been where to park all the bikes.

Seriously.

A good problem to have.

We can keep wasting billions expanding the bloated belt of US car infrastructure, or we can evaporate traffic by investing in walkable cities, bikes, trains, trams, buses, and sure, a few high-quality car lanes.
Washington DC overtakes Los Angeles for worst American traffic
Drivers in Washington DC now have the longest commutes in the country, and congestion on weekdays spans more than six hours.

Twisted North Korean-style (except weirdly low energy) military parade.

Millions peacefully protesting in hundreds of cities and towns protesting Trump’s fascism, often in the face of violent police seeking to provoke riots.

An actual political assassination and act of terror by a “Christian.”

I don’t follow NYC politics, but if there’s anything I learned in the past two or three months:

1. NYC has ranked choice voting (cool!)
2. Andrew Cuomo is bad

If this is how this administration responds to a Senator with a question, you can only imagine what they're doing to farmworkers, to cooks, and to day laborers throughout California and across the country.

We will hold this administration accountable.

Michigan Ave should be for people walking, biking, and high quality, frequent public transit of many sorts.
Michigan Ave is incredibly hostile to anyone not in a car: frustrating to ride on a bus due to no dedicated lanes, noisy to walk along, hazardous to cross, scary to ride a bike on. Will IDOT ever work with the city to improve things??

Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.

They are trying to intimidate us. Don’t let them. It’ll be even harder to resist later if we cede ground now. Every person, if able, needs to be out there marching this Saturday. None of us can afford to coast on the work of others. Citizenship now requires more than voting. Let’s do this, together.

At some point, someone said we should "ban cars" from this area and it eventually resulted in this.

Ban cars and let's see what can thrive.

When we push for walkability, bike lanes, and good transit, it's called "forcing a lifestyle."

But when the auto industry traps you in a car-dependent society and drains your wallet, that’s somehow called “freedom.”

Got it...

Zohran Mamdani wants to make NYC buses free as mayor. How would that work?
In a race that is shaping up to be about who can make New York City most affordable, free buses are an appealing – if expensive – proposal.
