Hello #PortfolioDay ! I’m Arlen and I love to paint dragons. If you’re seeking fantasy illustrations packed with color, keep me in mind! While most of my projects are commissions, I’m very interested in book covers and TTRPG illustration. 🐉

I got an actual "Your silence on this subject is deafening" message this AM, so, super-quick: Nobody here owes anyone commentary about anything. This is a public park. It's full of interesting people. We hang out here, make friends, and chat, and then we leave to do whatever it is we do. That's it!

Libraries purchase books. When you see a book at the library, it isn’t “free”

the library bought it.

which in turn means that the community bought it.

In other words, library books are not lost sales for authors and publishers; they’re positive sales. Active sales. Those are bought.

good news: didn’t buy a camera today (looked at the listing again and it turned out to have a substantial crack in the housing that I did not trust)
Staring off into the middle distance because a used edition of the camera I want came up in my price range but I really shouldn’t buy it yet (I am forcing myself to stay focused on work via Good Tunes but I keep thinking about CAMERA)

There's a (decently) well known lesson that an art instructor should be teaching: (generally) you shouldn't copy from other artists that aren't masters. Why? Because you will learn their mistakes. You will learn their bad habits.
So telling students to use genai is the mark of a horrible teacher.

Genai is filled with mistakes- obvious, stupid, easily spotted mistakes. Telling people to learn from bad material will make them learn all the things that make that material is bad. It's why it's so obvious when a traditional artist is using genai; they copy the red flags, the flaws, the gunk.

The real kicker I keep discovering in these sellout artists using genai is that they almost always sell classes. It's all part of the grift; shortcuts for end results. Why bother figuring out how to collect reference material and understand how things work when "a/i can do it". Newsflash: IT CAN'T

A good reminder of where I stand on this: I DGAF how technically good you are at traditional painting. If you use genai in ANY part of your process, you have abandoned the soul of art, abandoned the artist community and forfeit any reason I should give you an ounce of respect.

time limited commissions are a really good way of bonking myself over the head to learn to be efficient with shapes and brush strokes (this is very fun and I am excited to see what I figure out after spending around 30 hours doing them)

So many artists, writers, and designers I know have learned this lesson the tedious way, so let me co-sign this and say not only is it a huge waste of time and labor to listen to the "I'd buy that" crowd online, you will also lose money. Make what *you* want to make, everything else is noise
The biggest thing i've learned as an artist who sells prints and merch is don't make what people ask for. They won't buy it. Make what you, the artist, want to see printed on the support of ur choice.
I can't explain why but THAT'S what will sell. People who buy the most are the silent ones. 🫶
Remember, artists: when people say, “I’d buy a print of this,” they don’t mean it. That sentence itself is just a weird compliment that rarely converts to an actual print sale. It’s like if someone ate a very good hot dog and then said, “I could eat 10,000 of these right now.”
